I'm all for the offer sheet as long as Feaster has plans in the works to re-acquire at least 2 of either any combination of our 1st, 2nd or 3rd rounders.
I don't think the Flames are bad enough to finish in a top 3 pick but if they do they will be looking to move out some assets that have the ability to get some solid return. At least I hope they would be

So, you are saying, no matter which team is ends up on, Flames or Avalanche, he will not sign for anything less than $6.5M?
How can you say that? How can you say it's impossible for him to sign for less?
Do you really think ROR would reject a $30/5 year deal this off-season just so he can become a UFA in 2014?
WHAT IS THE BENEFIT FOR ROR TO HOLD OUT?

I'm pretty 50/50 on if Colorado matches or not, it's a short term deal and I think they could get more for him.

It's a win/win regardless.

And some will also see the fact that Colorado becomes instantly more competitive if they match by getting O'Reilly (albeit somewhat disgrunted) as a positive to getting the Flames further down the standings.
I don't really understand those people because I always want the team to be as competitive as possible. Interestingly this is a rebuild move while becoming more competitive now so I love it.

The Flames so badly need a centre. Even if ROR won't be a top line guy he is much needed here. Also the way that things seem to work lately with these guys, Calgary would have just missed the playoffs again. This means they would have picked out of the top 5 or so and thus would probably not end up with a franchise type player in the draft. Now, ROR may not be that franchise guy either but he is a semi known talent and he fills one of the holes desperately needing to be filled around here.
Love it. Love it. Having said that, if I'm Colorado I match and trade. Preferabally outside of the conference.
|
They can't. Have to keep him for at least one calendar year from the date of matching. This would also fall in past next season's trade deadline, so the very earliest the Avs could trade him, would be the end of the 2013/2014 season, and at that point, they'd be trying to trade a 6.5M RFA Center.

What if Baertschi asks for $6.5M in 3 years?
Dammit, we're screwed.

If he leads the team in scoring, I'd be happy to give it to him.

That's maybe the most interesting part of this - if they sign him, they are married for basically two years because the trade deadline for 2013-2014 is likely less than a year away. Shrewd stuff is that's why Feaster actually waited as long as he had to do it to further handcuff the Avs.

Well yes, but I thought the point was you could have offered him 3 years vs 2, and he'd still be in the exact same position.

I think they're mostly not happy with Avs management and for O'Reilly for wanting more than Duchene, not necessarily about losing him for this contract (from what I've read)
EDIT: It's probably closer to 50-50. Half want the Avs to match, half want him gone. 100% are glad that this sega only has a week left

Interesting that the poll shows most CPers think the Avs will let O'Reilly go.
Yet the media thinks they will match.
If the Avalanche have any intention of matching, wouldn't they do so as soon as possible to get O'Reilly into the lineup? Or will they wait a week just to spite the Flames?

Nice to see you're still a terrible poster.

Now you are getting in the ballpark of what it might take to get him to sign a longterm deal, 6 million a year. If he is taking a 500K paycut for the first two years for guaranteed 18 million on the backend that would definitely make sense. In that scenario there is probably no benefit for him to holdout.
Like the name calling, always adds a bit of class to the debate.

O'Reilly is an 81 in NHL 13 with a gold 4 star potential rating. If that helps. He's an 80 in faceoffs. LOL.

If whoever has his rights in 2 years doesn't qualify him he becomes a UFA, though that will never happen.
However, the prospect of him being guaranteed $5.5M+ for 14-15 even if he gets taken to arbitration will absolutely impact any negotiations on an extension and anyone who doesn't recognize that is being willfully ignorant. If he's not getting offers from his team that are to his liking he can basically just do nothing and he'll be guaranteed to get a high paying contract or become a UFA in 2014.
That fact is exactly why the Flames structured the contract like that. They want it to be an unpalatable contract for Colorado to match.

Thats going to be a very bad relationship for the next year and a half or when ever they are allowed to trade him, if the Av's match.
Not to mention the amount of leverage that gives Duchene and Ladeskog.
