Not surprised? He's never done either thing before. He's never brought in a player with term midseason and he's never dealt a player at the draft for picks.
I'd say either move would be surprising, and both together would be mind blowing.
I do think something like that would be a good idea, I just don't think the Wizard can execute that series of moves.

Yeah, good points. Making a move like that is a no-brainer, but then you have to consider the history.

Haha come on now guys! I know he sucks down hot dogs almost as fast as he double-fists two cans of Coca-Cola® at the same time (theoretically), but the LandPhil can still be a difference maker.
His raw stats suck but he plays on a poo team.
This season looking at his possession-relative stats he is:
(in terms of percentile of players with over 450 mins of TOI at even strength)
85th in CF% Rel
79th in xGF% Rel
75th in SCF% Rel
81st in HDCF% Rel
93rd in SF% Rel
All of which is indicative that he's stuffing his face with hot dogs with 1 hand on the bus wheel, instead of double-fisting them in the back with one seat to himself
EDIT - Jeez they're also loading him up with minutes, like 17 min a night. We'd be giving him 5-7 and that's with 2nd powerplay time. Could be better in short sprints, like Gimli.
He's also shooting like 5% on the year, that's gotta come around at some point right?

He supposedly did make a play for Jason Zucker in 2019 that got quashed. That looks to be a case of the best deals you make are the ones you don't. But I think the scuttlebutt at the time was Frolik and a first going the other way. I would hope another pick coming back to the Flames too....
So it seems that they have looked to do this in the past, just that the players with term available in season often are not the Belles of the Ball so to speak.

Maybe this has already been answered, apologies if so, but how does Vegas fit Eichel on their team given they are over the cap. Are they forced to trade someone at this point?

Yeah, though I think he has a general strategy about player trades. He obviously prefers younger targets for the splashier trades, and he definitely likes guys who are pending RFAs who he thinks are perhaps having some hard negotiations (Hamilton, Hanifin, Lindholm).
I think it’s pretty hard to get guys with term in season. It doesn’t happen that often. And it’s pretty hard to get a lot of good picks at draft day because teams and their fans are more attuned to using those picks.

They will need to make room, yes.

I think this is why we have seen Reilly Smith's name out there.

Oh, yeah, you're correct. I'd forgotten about that near miss. What a terrible deal that would have been, if the reports of the cost were true.

Wasn't it a 2nd and Frolik? Or some other player not long for the roster.
Edit: it was the 2019 1st and Frolik. With added rumors later that it was bumped to Bennett and Fro.
Wouldn't have liked Bennett and Frolik, but the pick and Fro, yeah why not, they needed the bump. May have turned out differently with a fw upgrade in the top 6.

What would happen if he is medically cleared to play, but they can't move salary, I can't see any teams lining up to help Vegas

Automatic forfeit of the season, and forced to sell and relocate the team to the Eastern Conference (I can only hope)

I would give a 6th rounder for Riley Smith to help them out but it also helps the flames get a right shot too 6 forward for a late pick.
They may have to sell a good player cheap but they can move contracts.

Teams will make a deal for Smith or whoever if it helps them. They’re not going to pass up an opportunity to improve their team just to screw Vegas.
Vegas will be a highly motivated seller, so they may not get as much for Smith as they would otherwise. But he’s a good player. Someone will grab him as a playoff rental for a 2nd and a 4th or something.

The entire NHL knows they need to make a move, so it will be just like last time where they ended up trading Schmidt for a 3rd. It will be interesting to see the what it will take to help Vegas get under the cap.

100% agree but it looks like he shoots left
would still explore this as he has excellent playoff numbers

Doubt Riley Smith is going to any team Vegas might see in the playoffs before the finals. Certainly not cheaply, and probably not at all. I assume he'll got to the East.
