Assuming we re-sign Gaudreau, Tkachuk and Mangiapane to new deals, going to be real hard adding any new money next year except for rotating out depth players.
But at the deadline you can take on more salary because of proration. Players on expiring contracts are also cheaper to acquire than players on good contracts with term.

Bring on Phil the Thrill
Cheap to acquire, can slot onto the third line. He’s fast and has a great shot. Doesn’t need to be a leader.
Plus it’d be hilarious to have him as a Flame
Holy #### just looked it up and he’s on an $8M contract good lord

I would not be surprised to see a deal made to bring in a player at a key position with term, then a player dealt at the draft. Example: Flames trade for Tofolli, then trade Mangiapane for assets at the draft. Keep the team whole, but then improve the depth in the long run.

I will be a bit surprised if all of Gaudreau, Tkachuk, Mangiapane are back next year.
For me, I think the Flames really need to know what is going on with Tkachuk.

Pike sure has been beating the bring Kulak back drum it seems like all season long.
Personally I don’t get it. Unless Zadorov is being shipped out to fit some cap in I am not sure why any assets would be wasted on a bottom pairing left shot Dman

This shouldn't be a surprise. Both Sutter and Treliving have a history of adding depth D at the TDL. Some GM's have said things along the lines of you need 8 NHL D for the playoffs.

I feel like with Valimaki, Stone, and Mackey they have decent depth.
On the current Flames I do t see Kulak in the top 6 which is why I would hate to give up assets to add a guy who might not play.
If we get Kulak back I hope it is a throw in for the Toffoli deal

Just my hunch but I suspect neither Sutter or Treliving would consider Mackey, specifically, nor Valimaki a desirable option for playoff hockey.
When they talk about NHL depth, it guys how have hundreds of games under their belts, I bet.

I don't think Kulak's time here ended all that well from what I gather. Might be wrong. Also don't see why they would pick him up considering he'd likely never see the ice. Usually the depth pick ups at the deadline were guys that slotted in right away.

The only way that I would be happy about a trade would be to expand it so that a player or two coming to Calgary have the potential to be here for longer than this one year. I'd also want to send back to Philly player that they are familiar with and still value, in Tyler Pitlick. Philly also isn't afraid to try out younger players and would be a good landing spot for Matthew Phillips.
Would love to see :
Valimaki, Phillips, Pitlick, 2022 1st
for
Giroux (2M retained to fit into cap at the deadline)
Allison and 2022 3rd (heart on your sleeve middle six RW)
or
Frost (rough couple of years, maybe Philly has soured on him)

R u for real?
This is the equal of FLA offering CGY (if they were out of playoff race)
Juolevi, Heponiemi, Lomberg and a 1st
for
Gaudreau, Ruzicka, Zary & a 3rd
I’m sure Flames fan would love that!
Be realistic, I don’t even think you get Giroux for that package, never mind 2 of their active top prospects.

Ya same was said with Stone and Eichel.
I'd expect acquiring minor pieces at best.

Not even close to the same offer.
Valimaki has shown more than Juolevi in the NHL
Gaudreau at 28 is not comparable Giroux at 34.
Frost was a 2017 1st rounder somehow the same as a 2020 first rounder?
It was a bad offer but the classic “comparable” offer is even more ridiculous and not really at all the same as you claim it to be

Welcome to 2022 where he has neither of those anymore. His shot is a weak muffin and he is in contention for the slowest skater in the NHL. Zadorov caught him from behind the other night with minimal effort after which he went to the bench sucking wind like a long time smoker who just got chased by a bear. He can still dish the puck but so not worth it.

I suppose. I mean if he got a hat trick everyone throws hot dogs on the ice. Personally I want to see an impact forward but not impact like wow, the impact of Kessel falling broke the ice.

Yeah say no to LandPhil if he costs more than a third round pick.

I'd take Frost over Valimaki at this point. Could be a slotting issue as much as anything in PHI (see Bennett, Samuel) as their top 3C are locked down: Couturier-Hayes-Laughton, and then they have at least 6 established wingers, too.

Frost is frozen out (pun intended). Philly is a team that was built to be win-now. That put Frost on the backburner. He's been dominant in the AHL for a really poor Phantoms team over the past season and a bit. He really is too good for the AHL, but the Flyers are not giving him the opportunity to play up the lineup in any capacity. He's a skilled playmaker and would be a great get before he plateaus. If we could trade Valimaki for him, that would be a huge win for the Flames.

If u say so. I don’t think fans of other teams see any difference between Valamaki and Juolevi.
