He's already won his cup, so likely looking for the big dollars, which could mean he'd be willing to sign for Calgary (if they offered those). The biggest risks with him would be age, as he'd want a contract that would take him past his prime, and also whether or not he's a product of MacKinnon.
Just from the eye test, I'd say Rantanen is a pretty big star in his own right. He always kills it at international tournaments, away from MacKinnon, too. On top of that he's a big guy, even though he doesn't play an especially physical game. A first line of:
Huberdeau-Kadri-Rantannen
Could be great. Rantanen seems like he has a similar skillset to the players that had success with Huberdeau in Florida.

I wonder if we take a look if he goes free agency. He does play some C for Colorado at times. If he can play full time C that's a great fit.

Tough call for Colorado. That’s a big loss if Rantanen leaves but they have to plan for Makar’s raise in 2027. Makar will likely be the highest paid or 2nd highest paid player in the league at that point. If McDavid gets $16 million AAV (or potentially more), Makar will be close to that.

I love Rantanen, but that would mean the Flames would have ~$24m going to declining 35+ year olds in 2030. No thanks. Stay the course.
I also doubt he leaves Colorado. They've got room to re-sign him at Draisaitl dollars, especially with an increasing cap. It's just negotiations.

Might not be popular, but with Wolf being the way he is I would go hard on Ratannen and Petersson.
Ratanen is right shot and has played center a decent amount.

Don't think that's the issue. The issue is no one will give them anything good for Miller.

You don't just put on an Alan Jackson shirt after being in Calgary a few years. Guys probably had the shirt for a decade

Yeah Miller has been agreeable to this for a while now. His agent has been given permission to reach out to teams about a deal and as of now (as reported above) the offers have stunk.
And of course they would. 30 year old, locker room problem, big contract. People thinking he would get them Mercer, or LAF had their heads in the sand.

I'm supprised there's not more discussion of miller to the avs.
Seems like he would fill a big hole there and his personality wouldn't clash with MacK

A diminished return for Miller is more understandable (from other team perspectives) every day that passes. He’s 32. He’s not having a great year. This will be his 4th team. He has a record of not getting along with his teammates pretty much everywhere he goes. He’s signed for a long time and is likely to start declining if he hasn’t started already. He has a NMC that limits who he will be traded to.
And the recent personal leave could also be a concern for acquiring teams. I know we’re not supposed to speculate on a players reasons for personal leave but I imagine any acquiring GM would want to know exactly why before trading for him as there has been speculation it was because of something in that happened in the room.
All this makes his trade value really diminished compared to what he brings on the ice.

I’d rather the Flames go after Petterson than majorly overpaying for Rantanen

I actually feel like his personality being an issue is overstated. He brings a very rare combination of intensity, skill, grit and a voice. Any contender wanting to make a deep run in the playoffs should welcome Miller. And as you mentioned, his personality wouldn't clash with MacKinnon because MacKinnon might even be the same way.

Oof. The rare time I disagree with you, brother! Rantanen all day, every day for me.
