The Oilers tend to overvalue their players and their draft picks, so Talbot will end up walking.

That was just for the right to negotiate with him. The trade that sent him to the Kings had a lot of pieces, including a former 2nd round pick (Cernak - a 21yo defenseman who has played 31 games for the lightning this year) and 7th for a 5th. I had never heard of Cernak, but he sounds pretty much the equivalent of one of our young D?

2017-Feb-26 Traded from Tampa Bay Lightning with round 5 pick in the 2017 draft (Drake Rymsha) to Los Angeles Kings for Erik Cernak, Peter Budaj, conditional pick in the 2017 draft and round 7 pick in the 2017 draft (Wyatt Kalynuk)
2017-May-09 Traded from Los Angeles Kings to Dallas Stars for round 4 pick in the 2017 draft (Markus Phillips)

Regardless, Talbot goes cheap (assuming he goes at all).

Talbot is an 0.893 backup, and was under 0.910 last year too. No playoff team is picking him up to be their clear cut starter.
I would be surprised if he was moved for more than a 4th

Small sample size but watching Talbot on Saturday against Philly...he was outstanding even though they lost. Their defense that day was......yikes.
I think he is easily an upgrade on Smith even with his numbers but there is little to NO chance that Lowe allows anything to happen that could help the Flames.

Rob Tychkowski @Rob_Tychkowski
Despite the Oilers struggles, impending UFA Alex Chiasson has told management he likes it here and wants to re-sign with Edmonton, making it much easier to keep him past the trade deadline.

I agree with Tranny
Talbot is playing behind the worst blueline in the NHL and forwards who have checked out.
I'd be willing to try him as backup. He'll be highly motivated. He'll need a few weeks to shake the Oiler dust off of him, but i'm much more comfortable with Talbot (rather than Smith) as a guy who would have to carry the load should BSD get hurt in the playoffs.

pay the man. Just give him the Russell deal (4 x 4), he deserves it. Add an NTC while you're at it.

As an organization they have shown how cocky they are and that they believe that they are so much smarter than everyone else. They've also shown, more or less, that they've given up on Talbot. I can almost see Lowe trading Talbot to the Flames thinking he is secretly hurting us, and laughing to the rest of the Old Boys Club how he really got us good this time!

Regarding Sekera loaned to AHL for conditioning, and being cap compliant (from Capfriendly)
Quote:
“The purpose of such a loan is to determine if a player returning from long term injury is fit to play. The loan may not exceed 6 days & 3 games, but can be extended an additional 2 games if required. Oilers remain $1,230,834 in full cap hit value above the ceiling, & are required to shed that amount from their salary cap prior to being able to activate Sekera off LTIR. EDM placed Sekera on off season LTIR for the purpose of exceeding the cap on the last day of training camp.”

Chaisson could be doing that and he could also be looking at his own situation of a marginal NHL player who's bounced around the league, a guy who couldn't get anything but a try out this summer. If someone is offering a guaranteed deal, you take it.

So they need to clear 1.23M before he can come up and they have 6 days to figure it out. Unless they deem he isn't capable of coming back (but when has an Oilers doctor ever done that).
So Gravel should get demoted for sure as he is the 7th Dman. That is 700k. With Klefbolm also returning soon, one of their other expensive pylons will probably be demoted (Manning, Benning, or Petrovic).

Chiasson is no fool. Has his cup ring already and rightly concludes that a) He'd likely meet the same fate as Joe Colborne in the free agent market b) He's a bit of a unicorn in that he'd willingly play for the Oilers and has shown to be the least bad option on that first line.
Add in the high likelihood that the Oilers GM by committee will ignore his anomalous shooting percentage this year and gladly fork over a 3x4MM or better.

Players that can be traded without having to sweeten the deal:
- Talbot
- Nurse
- Larsson
- Chiasson
- Khaira
- Puljujärvi
- Nuge
- Draisaitl
- McDavid
And a few of these players salaries aren't enough to get them under the cap alone. All to keep this bottom-feeding team compliant with the cap limit, while their most recent marching orders were to add for a big play-off push.
Seems like trading Talbot for a pick (no matter how low) is looking to be their best option right now

That should be interesting to see the return on that.
Traded waiver fodder Wideman and a 3rd for Petrovic. 3rd and Petrovic for...
I can't wait to see if the reverse paperclip game continues!
