How much better would they be if their back end had Hamilton and Jones. Hall would have been kept as a there would not have been a need to trade for Larsson.
Granted not even those trades cold save the Oilers. Nothing can.

It’s so true. Chia had one chance to gut their team & sell high.
For some reason he decided to wait a season. Even if they don’t get Jones for RNH they probably could have had Larsson in 2015, kept Hall or recycled him for more if he had to go, maybe even Johansson?
But he didn’t.
They evaluate Nurse, and every other player, as the best case scenario of the player, not what the player actually is. They do this with their own players, free agents, & players on other teams.
When it’s completely obvious that the player doesn’t meet their sky high expectations the team/fans/media sewer him and blame the player.
When they evaluate prospects... it’s even worse. Even McDavid is ONLY meeting their expectations.
It’s an institutionalized evaluation process of suck for them.
Nicholson can NOT change it because he was systematically chosen by the very process he’s hoping to eliminate. Even if he identifies it, he’ll look himself in a mirror & say... “nope can’t be that, but I’ll ask Kevin for a second opinion.”

will need to clear caps space to activate him after his conditioning stint
Edmonton Oilers @EdmontonOilers
The #Oilers have sent defenceman Andrej Sekera to the @Condors for a conditioning assignment.

They might be able to fit him in under the cap, but they won't be able to do much in terms of bringing on salary at the TD. I think with Sekera they'll have the equivalent of $48,000 in cap space.

I'm somewhat sure that they still need to clear capspace to fit him in. More or less they have the ability to add 4.1M, but Sekera is 5.5M. So need to remove 1.4M. Looks like one of their defenseman will need to be moved.
Could be wrong.

I think you are correct. But I don't see how they move Manning, Petrovic or Benning without adding a sweetener to some team. They are negatives.
I guess they could also move Talbot and elevate Montoya to make room.

Those are really players that I can't see teams lining up for, Manning and Benning both have term, and I don't think teams are going to want to burn cap space on Petrovic's contract. I can see a team looking at Talbot maybe, but yeah, I think even that's a stretch, it never seems like there's a huge goalie market out there.
Those players are equivalent to the Oiler's management team standing out front of their dressing room and yelling "Bring out your dead"

Yup. They could add a contract with the equivalent full-season Cap value of about $4.2 million according to Cap Friendly. Someone has to go to fit Sekera in.

Trade Smith with salary retention of, say 50% for Talbot.

I was thinking the same thing, but Capfirendly still has Sekera on LTIR and not their defense roster. Even with a conditioning stint I am pretty sure they don't get any cap relief now that Sekera is activated off LTIR. So I don't know if that 4.2 is entirely correct. Could be less.

They probably are already shopping Talbot and unloading him for a pick would free up cap space. If they are really holding out for a high return they will likely be holding on to him for a while though.

Talbot isn't presently worth much of a pick. Third rounder maybe. But then Calgary has both Talbot and Smith and their salaries. Smith gets buried I guess.

Man, that Sekera situation is like a countdown timer to a horrible trade. So delicious.

Yeah, I so want to see Keith Gretzky botch his first trade as the shiny new GM of the Oilers. With the kind of "advisors" he has available this should get rather juicy.

I wasn't insinuating they would trade him to the Flames because I just can't see the Oilers doing anything that they perceive may help the Flames unless the Flames overpay. I think he's going to be moved at or before the deadline because he's one of the few trade chips they have but he's not going to bring a lot back in return.

I can't even imagine the horror of being Mike Smith in that scenario. Talk about the worst possible way to end ones carreer.

Is Talbot worth much? Isn't his contract over this year, and he hasn't exactly been lighting it up...

Could use a truckload more salt, so Talbot to Calgary for a 4th (I read 3rd, and Oiler-adjusted) would be just fine ty.
Smith sits in the press-box and starts his coaching career early. He's super cool about it, as Florida blew him out of the water and he appreciates this opportunity to still ride along with the Flames.
Talbot stands on his head for a few starts, which leads to him carrying a few more games at the end of the season to give Rittich a bit more rest.
Calgary enters the post-season with 2 hot-handed goalies
Christmas can come 10x a year. I believe!

So does Gretzky have to clear 4-5M in cap space to activate Sekera?

Not sure Talbot would garner a 3rd round pick to any team. He's UFA at the end of the year and goalies typically get traded for peanuts as it is.
Ben Bishop was traded for just a fourth rounder when he was a UFA-to-be.
