No to mention that that stadium for the first match is twice as big as most of the other stadia.

Soccer City's capacity is a whopping 94,700 according to wikipedia. The attendance for the game was 85,000.

Good lord, that is a lot of people!!

Airdrie only has 25,000 people. They had 3 and a half Airdries inside that stadium.

I would not be too surprised if attendance was less than capacity throughout the World Cup. I read (no link nor backup - just read) that World Cup 1994 was the only one to sell every ticket for every game.

In Korea in 2002, the organizers were busing in school kids to fill the empty seats. The round of 16 game that I attended was maybe at 70% capacity in a relatively small stadium.

I'm admittedly not a soccer fan, just a sports fan who usually gets into this tournament because I just appreciate the sheer size of it and how the world gets into it. But I was reading an SI article trying to get into it and I read a couple different quotes saying how the '94 World Cup was the worst ever. Was there a bunch of crap going on around the tournament I didn't know about, because I always thought it was a huge success. Or is it more just a case of the world hating on Americans for the sake of hating on Amercans?

We might be going to Gaucho for a Brazil match, but we'd cheering for Cote D'Ivoire. My sister-in-law was invited to go for that match by her Brazilian friends, and asked if my wife and I wanted to come along as well.

Probably not a good idea if I was in Brazil, but should be a problem here.

Maybe in 2004. Airdrie probably has 40,000+ now.

the 1994 cup was hugely successful in terms of ticket sales.

There was a heat wave for a good part of the tournament, it was really hot. Players would run to the sidelines almost every time down the feild to get a bag or cup of water to dump on their heads. Other then that, I think some people in the (english) media complained about the fancy patterns mowed into the grass.

Ahh ok, thanks guys. Ya some of those English media types sure like to whine, wasn't it an Englishman who coined the "Deadmonton" term during the '94 Commonwealth Games(though that one's funny). Anyway, it was a couple Brazilians who said the quote, which I just thought was weird. You'd think a Brazilian would have good memories of the '94 World Cup. Sounds like he was just being a hater then..

I was at the 1994 World Cup in Dallas and it was very hot but I thought it was well-organized. It's like any other NA sporting event I've been to, have a ticket get in, sit down at your seat.

There may have been less atmosphere cause American fans (even cheering for other countries) aren't going to be dancing and chanting. It was a north american event.

I've never been to any other World Cup so I have no comparision.

Haven't heard a whole lot about him but Uruguay's Suarez scored 49 goals in 48 matches in all competition this season. That is ridiculous, even if he plays in the Dutch league.

Nice Save there by Uruguays keeper.

I think this is Bob Bradley's last run with the USMNT. I hope he goes out with a bang as I like him a lot. Rumors are that he could be coaching in one of the top leagues in Europe next year ie EPL or La Liga. I don't think there's a coach out there who prepares more than him.
