If Hanifin's number that he wants does indeed start with an 8, I'd laugh if he ends up in a Klingberg situation by overplaying his hand.

That won’t happen, Klingberg was a PP dman and that is it. Hanifin is a complete defenceman. He will be fine either way, so you don’t have to worry about laughing.

8 team NTC. Scared me for a minute

Also, Conroy has been in involved in talks with teams on a Hanifin trade all season and Hanifin has been kept up to date and given feedback through his agent as he has a NTC. If the right trade was available any point in the past few months, Conroy would have made it, he was not putting himself in a polite corner by giving Hanifin the better part of the season to decide. That makes no sense.

Klingberg was a solid defensemen in his early years with Dallas, which is why he was offered 8 years by $7M. Then came injuries and his defensive game started to tank. I doubt Hanifin gets $8M plus unless it's on a non playoff team like Coyotes.

If you want the big bucks, you need to be a complete player, and that includes production. And if you aren't on the PP, it says a fair bit about a) you, or b) your team. Considering there are NO PP guys on the Flames, it says a fair bit that Hanifin hasn't earned that role.

Really good player. Just a question of price/value. And I find it hard to justify giving him 20-25% more than Weegar.
These are good points and it is what stops Hanifin from being an elite defenseman.

But you have to give Hanifin his due 5on5 and on the PK. Last night he played 27:46 and Weegar played 19:52.

Their season averages are much closer but Hanifin has really been hitting his stride lately and IMO the gap between he and Weegar has widened.

That would be the worst thing that could happen to the Flames.

I don't think Hanifin will voluntarily walk away from his contract.

That's a player you may look to re-sign. But having him resign is the opposite of that.

At the age Hanifin currently is, that's when Weegar started to show that he was a top 4 defenceman. So being a 27 year old UFA with what likely will be 680 games played at defenceman in the NHL is exceptionally rare. In buying his age 27 to 34 seasons, it's not unreasonable to think 6 of those could rate as his best seasons and all 8 are productive. Whereas Weegar, you haope to get his 3 best and that he's still serviceable in the last two.

So that's a pretty big difference and why Hanifin would be offered 7.5 on the open market.

In a bidding war as a UFA, Hanifin would get 8M very easily (in my opinion).

In fact, if he decides to go the Chucky route, I could see a long list of suitors looking to trade for him with an 8x8 in place. Especially when you consider that in 2-3 years 8M is gonna be like spending 6M today.

If he signs for 8 years he really needs to go Hanifin-Hanafin on his nameplate.

Hanifin needs to ask for 8
Just like Conroy needs to offer 6.8
Then they dance
And
It’s Conroys call when to decide that the dance is over one way or the other
And
We are probably still 2 and 1/2 weeks away from there

(Ok now watch a trade or signing happen tomorrow)

I think trading him (assuming a significant return) is probably better asset management, given the current roster and lack of top end talent in the pipeline; however, as others have pointed out, Hanifin really seems to be hitting his stride.
He's not afraid to make plays at the offensive blue line, whereas he used to be kind of tentative, and it really seems to be rounding out his game nicely. I could see him still providing a similar level of play well into his 30s.

Put me in the boat of re-signing Hanifin over Andersson.

Andersson could likely get you an even bigger haul, but it won’t happen.

Hopefully they get a 2025 1st for Hanifin. This first round of this draft sounds weak and we’re already picking twice in it.
