Huh? The reasons for gangs in Canada are no different than in any other place, illegal drug trade topping the list. You don't need mass areas of ghetto to produce gang breeding grounds.

Gang's in Canada are almost like the customs agents for illegal goods coming into this country.

A lot of them are funded by drug shipments, gun shipment and the illegal sex slave trades from the far east. They're well paid for their endeavors and they allow the bigger problems to be camouflaged as the police have to focus on combating them.

In the end, these types of gangs are here because of demand. Chances are that small stash your smoking at the end of the week to relax can be traced back to one of these gangs supplying it. Don't want to support them? Stop doing drugs (or at least grow your own).

I'm guessing there's an increase in white collar ######s doing blow as well.....

That's so far off base you don't even know. The Fob and Fobk in Calgary don't come from wealthy families and a lot of them still live with their parents in Dover and Forest Lawn believe it or not. They are petty drug dealers, but the killings have nothing to do with a drug war, but personal vendettas against each other.

All the killings started from one girl dating a guy and the jealous ex bf killing him. These guys were dealing drugs long before they were ever involved in any gangs.

Also, I don't think you could say any gang is a joke no matter how powerful another gang is because these gangs carry weapons and shoot on site no matter what time and no matter who is in the way. That doesn't seem like a joke to me.

There's some crazy stuff going on in Montreal right now too. Since Vito Rizzuto got busted and his son Nick was killed earlier this year there is a power vaccuum. Looks like the Calabrian's are trying to take over from the Sicillian's.

Compared to huge swaths of LA controlled by gangs, our gang problem is a minor blip.

And I'm sure that the gangs in Mexico would make L.A gangs seem like a minor blip. Doesn't change the fact that all gangs are a problem.

I don't think you have any idea just how bad the gang problem is down south.

Gangs have been a problem for a long time in Canada. For example it's been on of the Hell's Angels most solid foundations for a while.

To say they are just posing completely ignores the fact that gangs have caused innocent people to be injured and killed just like everywhere else.

Ignorant comment.
I understand your point Jiri - That isn't the point I was trying to make.

If one is to grow up in a real Ghetto like those that that exist in the United States, you're almost forced into that lifestyle. These Canadian gangs are groups of people who DESIRE to live that kind of lifestyle.

That's my only point, I agree that the consequences and issues that arise from gangs are NOT different.

Seeing a Vietnamese gang member being hacked by a machete in West Edmonton Mall Boxing day about 10 years ago was one of the most eff'd up things i'll ever see in my life.

I'm sure it's not as bad as the gangs in Mexico cutting off fellow gang members heads and shipping them to their families. I'm well aware of the gang problem in the States. Some Mexican gangs operate down there, but it's not even close to what the gangs do in Mexico.

You can't compare apples to oranges. All gangs are a problem no matter how big they are compared to other gangs in other countries.

As B&A just said, gangs exist in the USA and Mexico because of economic necessity.

The gang problem there is so bad because the general public are often collateral damage.

The Mexican gang problem has gotten really bad because of the recession, which shrank their available market. They're fighting over smaller pieces of the pie now.

In regards to Calgary, we don't really have the economic problems that force the creation of formidable gang activity. FOB/FOB Killers are just a bunch of posers.
