Hockey - do you shoot left or right?

Right handed Canadian, shoot right. My parents were not big into sports so they just told me that I needed to shoot with my right hand since I was right handed. This past winter I was concerned about my two year old son shooting with the correct hand. He is right handed but I didn't want to teach him one way or the other. So I bought a stick with a straight blade so he could figure it out on his own. He basically just back hands the puck shooting left. Hopefully we can work on it a bit more seriously this coming winter.

Skating with the kids this winter I started to play around with a left handed stick. I can definitely see that stick handling would be a lot easier with my right hand at the top of the stick. Shooting is a different story though.

oh and my rant...or 'what grinds my gears' Quit calling it ice hockey! Its hockey, thats it, no ice, no nothing, its Hockey...use the lame descriptive words for the other 'sports' that imitate hockey and do so poorly. end rant

Not at all.

Started out golfing left at a young age, and apparently my swing resembled a slap shot, but I had an awesome short game.

Refined my swing and improved my long game tremendously, but subsequently lost my short game (I have no idea why).

I switched to the claw grip for putting which helped for a while but ultimately failed. It got to a point where I'd be standing over a 10 foot putt and be liable to send it 15 feet long.

So I tried putting right handed. The awkwardness of the stroke simplified everything, I really had to focus on the mechanics, and found I regained my touch. So as long as it works I'm sticking with it.


My friend was telling me the other day about some putters he saw that are designed like a hockey stick. Kind of like Happy Gilmour. Anyone seen these? It seems like that could be the long term solution to my putting problems.

THey sold them with a flames logo on NHL.com last year .... they dont have a big blade life a hockey stick but the look like hockey sticks..

Kickball : Left Foot is the dominant kicking foot
Pool : Left handed shot
Steak Cutting: The knife is in my left hand . I always get , oh I didnt know you were left handed from my parents or friends when we go out for steak. I thought all the righties did it that way lol!!!

EBay has 'em, but they are expensive. You'd be better off to buy a Scotty Cameron for this price

How does your dominate foot tie into all this? If your right handed are you automatically left foot dominated? Or can you be right handed and right foot dominated? Your dominate foot would aid in balance while shooting would it not?

When you say right foot dominant do you mean you kick with your right? Or you kick with your left because you use your dominate right foot for balance? I guess I'm just asking if your dominate foot is your kicking foot or your balance foot?

I seem to remember a thread on this some time back.

I am Canadian, right-handed, and also shoot right in hockey. Having my dominant hand on the bottom of my hockey stick gives me a wicked wrist shot.

In soccer I'm ambidextrous, although naturally right-footed. The left foot got a little extra attention when I was younger, and it paid off. Now they're literally equal.

I have seen the occasional guy who is right-handed but left-footed. It is rare, but it does happen. I'd guess that 95% of soccer players are naturally right-footed though.

Dominant foot would be the kicking foot, or alternatively, the foot you naturally put in front of you for stability when pushed from behind.

@burn_baby_burn : Dominant feet and hands aren't tied together. There's a lot of righties that ride goofy foot and vice versa. If dominant hand side and dominant foot side are the same, it's just coincidence. However I find that kind of odd considering how the brain works.

As for the hockey stick putters - river city has them in a bunch of teams. They're neat, but I don't think they're worth the $150.

Maybe not, but it may have a connection. I am right handed, shoot left and am goofy footed.

I also reverse the Y axis in first person shooters.

Anyone else?
