maybe a dumb question but something I always wondered. Do fighter pilots get their own planes or do they have to share?
Canada I think has less than 50 f-18s, so unless we only have that many fighter pilots in the air force, there are only so many planes we have. Factoring things like maintenance, not all planes are ready to fly at a moment's notice
Just something I wondered

Depends, usually your assigned to a plane. And then you have to sign for it. That way if you wreck it you have to pay for it.

There's one parked at the north end of the Shell building right now. I'm hoping to get a shot of them coming in before it rains.

Better take out a good insurance plan.
"I'd like to open a vehicle insurance policy please"
" What type of vehicle do you drive sir?"
"F-A/18 Hornet, it has racing stripes."

Indeed, or you'll find yourself flying a cargo plane carrying rubber dogsh*#t out of Hong Kong.

"Hmm my policy calculator says your premiums will be $36,000/month. There must be something wrong with the program...."

I was playing ball at the diamond off McKnight last time those were in Calgary. The hourly flybys were awesome. They did dark landings one night - just incredible. Totally stopped the games.

The Tornados are supposed to be leaving today, I heard departure was set for sometime between 8-10:30am. They should also be leaving with an RAF C-17 and a VC-10.

It's hard to believe the Tornado's are this old but it was 25 years ago right now that I was at Canadian Forces Base Lahr, West Germany, on the edge of the housing development where Canadian solders were kept, standing on a curb when a seemingly endless string of Tornado's emerged from a cloud bank to land at a nearby airfield.
I thought that was pretty cool.
Also pretty cool to be driving on the base and not know what a small red light was for at the end of an airstrip and have two Canadian F104 Starfighters do the splits at nought altitude right over my head as they were taking off. No one lost an eye so I guess it was okay.
Good trout fishing on that base. And eels from the French who preceded the Canadians.

2 Tornados and one VC-10 are holding short of runway 16 right now. Will be departing to the south over the city so keep your eyes open.

^^^ That exact scene will probably be happening in a few hours. Amazing that the VC-10 was louder than the two Tornados after it, although they weren't on afterburner as they passed over McCall lake.

I'm surprised they would take off together, the tornados could have given the tanker a couple hours head start. now their forced to fly at a measly 500 kts.
[edit] Was that another one I just heard?

Apparently the RAF C-17 is getting ready to go, not on tower frequency yet.

I landed at the airport this morning. The VC-10 and C-17 were sitting on the tarmac. I didnt see any tornados although I saw a couple when I left last wednesday.
