Wait, is this real multitasking, or just apppauseandswitching?

Can I have an app running in the background doing something else?

Yup, the example they use is pandora playing music in the background while you do something else.

Even allows pandora to use the lock-screen ipod controls: wicked.

This is for real background multitasking... I'm actually impressed.

Ah ok, so they expose a limited set of APIs that are available to an app while it is in the background?

That doesn't seem to be all of it, while Pandora can use the background sound API, the app itself still has to be able to do stuff.. stream the data, get the next song, etc.

Seems like a bit of a limited multi-tasking. The full app probably isn't running in the background, but certain services do.

I should have thought of this, this is a very Apple-esque way of doing the multitasking.

Skype running in the background will be awesome.

How can Pandora stream if it isn't fully running? We aren't talking about the iPod audio playing from off your phone, this has to be streaming data as well...

probably all you need, since you can only view one app at a time anyway. We'll see I suppose.

You don't really need the whole app running, just the stuff that you would want running in the background.

Exactly.. background data must also be one of the services.

Vibrate the phone on local notifications please, and have it so you can set it to vibrate until you acknowledge the notification. Like when I miss a call but I don't know I have because I haven't looked at my phone.

So... Correct me if I am wrong... But it seems that apple deconstructed the idea of multitasking, identified what it is we like about multitasking, then built something to retain those core features.

This isn't really multitasking, but will have all the benefits without the battery drain.

Exactly.. which is very Apple-esque. They decide what is useful and give that to you
