5 stars. Seriously laughing to the point of crying.
I was told by my garbage man that with in 2 years we'll all have brown bins as well for our garbage. I bet that would be the limit. I've also heard that "out east" they have clear plastic bags to bust you for throwing out improper waste.
I have picked up a coffee gift card, and will try to tip the dude next week.
The nerve of Keys Please throwing my 'tip' out in the driveway after I handed them all of the empties I had gathered up from the house party they drove me home from last night. There were CHAMPAIGN bottles in there.

Wow, my garbage men must be "by the book" guys. They're always leaving stuff behind and it's actually kind of annoying.

- i'd recommend hand delivering coupons/cash, and maybe leaving the beer/wine, etc out of harms way, but easily visible and noticeable that its not garbage
- from September - April you will typically have the same garbageman. They hire seasonal workers in the late spring/early summer, and sometimes these new guys take over routes for those on holiday/vacation.
Like a few people have said, for instances (like home renos/moving out) when you SHOULD otherwise be going to the dump, and you leave it on the curb and the garbageman still takes it, you're being a nice guy by tipping.
We don't have a bag limit in Calgary, and most of these guys are good enough to throw it all away for you if you package it correctly and save you a trip to the dump that will end up costing you

I'm not a garbageman but I have a few friends that are and my dad was one for almost 15 years before moving up with the city.
It disgusts me how cheap people are in this city and can't believe a few of you said they don't deserve a tip.

Because they don't. They aren't working for minimum wage and needing tips to survive. Like I said before, if you tip garbagemen, where do you draw the line with city workers? Plow operators, police officers, firemen, paramedics??

So you're saying that because they aren't making minimum wage that th shouldn't be tipped? This person comes by your house every week to pick up your crap and yet you think the big titted waitress at the bar deserves your gratitude more?

I think you draw the line on someone who is in personal contact with you in serving you on a continuous basis during the year, and garbagemen would qualify... whereas the others you mentioned would not.
When you think of it there are not that many who you should tip i.e. the mailman, paperboy, garbagemen, masseur, hairdresser, cleaning lady etc.
If I lived in the country, and the plow operator took the time to clear snow on my property, I'd give him one also.

I think people should be able to tip or not to tip anyone they like. There should be no rules for something like this.

I don't think anyone is saying that there are rules, it's just that in some cases it's the nice thing to do.

There are no rules, but I believe the tradition of thanking people for their good service at Christmas time goes a long way to making people feel appreciated, and strengthens the relationship.
If you can't afford to give money... there's no problem. Even giving things like baking goods, homemade candy etc. I'm sure would be appreciated.

Hell yeah!
How exactly do you do a good job of putting trash in a truck? You either do your job fully, or else you're slacking off. Collecting garbage is not a job that has room to go above and beyond like waitressing does. A waitress can do a very good job of keeping an eye on your drink to make sure you're never really waiting. What does a garbageman do? Ring your doorbell to ask if any cans need emptying?
He either grabs all the bags or he doesn't. It's not a tippable industry, unless you just feel like tipping them.

Oh and about people giving booze as a tip to garbagemen, just be weary as some garbagemen do drink their tip while working. It's not a huge problem but I have heard of this happening and a few accidents in the alleys with trucks after said drinks.

I do "special" things for people at work all the time. I'm pretty sure that accepting tips from people is against the code of conduct I'm supposed to abide by.

People generally have a lot closer face-to-face relationship with police officers than they do garbagemen. How many of you go out and talk to these guys on a daily basis? I doubt they even want to chat with you. Get the trash picked up, and carry on.
I agree that you can tip whoever the hell you want, but I personally think tipping a garbageman is ridiculous.

Tipping in general is ridiculous when you think about it. Even when you get crappy service at a restaurant they still expect something.
And when that garbage man takes an extra trash can worth of garbage each week that he is suppose to I think the least I can do is leave him a gift card or a case of beer.

I think there is something to be said for tipping people that are not expecting it. And really, it's not a tip in my mind. It's simply a nice gesture to an individual.
My wife and I leave a box of chocolates for the garbage men and for our letter carrier every Christmas. It has nothing to do with the service being provided, I don't expect them to take extra trash or anything.
I didn't think this was wierd at all, I have some clients who will bring in some home made treats or whatever.
Everyone here is caught up in what and how much to leave but it really is more about the thought of the gesture.
Leaving a bag of empties is fracking hilarious though.
