I am incredibly disturbed by this trend.

I moved from an apartment to a house 2 years ago. So my first Halloween I asked the neighbor how many kids we get and he said about 40. So just in case, I bought enough candy for 50 and good thing I did because I got 45 trick-or-treaters.

Last year that 45 dropped to 25.

This year that 25 dropped to TWELVE!! TWELVE!!

From 45 to 12 in 2 years.

However, I made the mistake of going to the nearby mall yesterday and I couldn't move. There were hundreds upon hundreds of little munchkins there going store to store asking the clerks for candy (each store had a clerk in costume out front serving the kids). What the hell?

So next year I'm buying 20 400g Cadbury's. Reward the kids that go door to door.

I don't know what it is. Is it that the parents are too lazy to go door to door with their pre-teen kids? Would they rather get the candy inside where it is warm rather than walk around in the cold? Were there less this year because of concerns around H1N1? If so, that doesn't explain a mall packed with munchkins carrying who know what....

Unlike some in this thread who have said things like "0 and I like it that way", I kinda liked having the neighbors come by with their kids. Seeing the smiles on their faces and the cute costumes. Waving to the parents at the end of the lane. Sorta builds a sense of community.

My wife said we got 26 last night. Not surprising. We live in an area of Okotoks where there aren't a lot of kids of the trick or treat age. Most of the kids around here are teenagers.

ZERO!

Had the lights off this year, with good reason. I even felt bad...a little bit. Next year we'll do it up big.

Not one person rang the bell which is impressive.

We just bought those big buckets of cheap assorted candy and bags of assorted chips and put a few candies in a bag and made about and then started handing out chips when those were done. The kids started coming out about 3 or 4 and we were done by 6.

It is disappointing, also considering this was one of the warmest Halloweens in a while. I think its the general paranoia of the society as a whole. Everyone thinks their kid is going to get abducted or something. Also the healthy shift. I know of a lot of young families that dont allow their kids to have candy or any kind of treats and thus, no Halloween. I doubt it has anything to do with the kids. Who gives up a pillowcase full of candy for a couple hours of walking around?

Yesterday was also insanely windy here in Ottawa. Maybe that played a factor? I don't know.

I didn't notice anything abnormal about the wind last night. In terms of weather, it was damp but not rainy like it was last year here in Kanata.

If it was for health reasons, then a parent could do what my dad did. We'd have to let him go through our stuff looking for "dangerous" items like candy apples. Funny how half our stuff, including ALL of the ketchup chips turned out to be "suspicious". And it was real nice of him to sacrifice his own safety by eating the "suspicious" items. Just because they collect all this candy doesn't mean they have to eat it all and it can't be rationed over the year.

I think it is the growing distrust of other people.... Those kids at the mall still had pretty decent hauls of candy by the time they were done.

It's a real shame that kids go to the mall for trick-or-treating. That isn't Halloween. Halloween is kids getting dressed up and going door-to-door.

This Halloween wasn't even that cold, I went out when it was -25 and snowing. I also find it pathetic when I see a group of 15+ year old kids going out, without costumes, asking for candy. If a 16 year old is going out with his 2 young brothers, fine, but don't be a d-bag.

Zero.

In fact, zero for about the eighth year in a row too but that didn't stop Mrs. Cowperson from equipping us with enough candy for about 80 visitors yet again, even though there are only eight likely children within half a mile of our lonely hilltop aerie southwest of the city (four of them are Mormon and I have no idea if they trick or treat at all).

So, it is quite likely I'm going to be getting older, fatter and lose my teeth through the next month . . . . . . fortunately I ran for two hours this morning, lost about 3.5 pounds, then took the dogs walking in the mountains, all to get ready for the mammoth candy-fest I plan for tonight. But I can't do that every day.

Zero.

Took my kids out to Chestemere(Rainbow Falls). Residents there like to give some big chocolate bars and pop.

About 200 here, although that's just a rough estimate. We had 500 pieces of assorted candy (fun size bars, nerds, etc) and I was telling kids they could take 2. Some kids grabbed more, some seemed not to understand that they could take 2, and some kids who probably drove their car to my neighborhood I didn't point out that they could have two... so it probably averaged out to 2 pieces each, and I have less than 100 left.

Our street isn't busy, but it is one of the nicer streets in this area of town. Last year was the first year we were here, and it was a pretty big shock to run out within 30 minutes or something, causing me to run to the store for more.

One of the analysts on BNN just said she had 1,200 kids . . . . . she had enough candy for 700.

She's located in Toronto.

Wow.

We had about 25 in Fulham, which is a lot more than I was predicting since Halloween is a pretty North American thing and in Australia I never had any trick or treaters.

They were pretty uninitiated though, as most kids were carrying around crappy small bags and plastic pumpkin buckets; I don't think any had the appropriate equipment (i.e. pillow case).

we had a grand total of seven in Riverbend, and two of them were relatives. But to give the little nits credit they were all in costume.

I think we had around 100 (Springbank Hill) - I wasn't really counting. It was basically over by 8:00 though; I thought things might go a bit later between it being a Saturday with relatively nice weather and shifting off daylight savings.

Like a lot of others, I think the shopping mall trick or treat misses the whole point. Not to mention decorating the yard and giving out candies is probably as fun for the adults as going door to door is for the kids.
