Why? 70s band that changed the scene who in their first album (that was called moving hearts) had a song (something like)
"Up there in the Nova Scotia, sea bound coast ........"
Anyways I ramble ^ I have it on tape. Just wanted to say moving hearts = legend and if Donal Lunny or davy spillane ever hits yer part of the world check it out.
I'll post the full lyrics in the next few months when I track it down on tape. Best ... album ... ever.
Just curious, but what are you up to in Fredericton?
UNB Law, I'm starting to get really excited about it. Still hasn't fully sunk in that I'm going to achieve a childhood dream (becoming a lawyer)

Let me know when you're here. I laughed out loud when I read Smooth Herman's. It's the legendary Cape Breton drinking establishment. I haven't been there in months (I'm getting a little old for that scene) but it's still around. Not as busy as it used to be, but I think that has more to do with population demographics than anything else.
Steel City has wing specials throughout the week, and best wings in the city IMO. My friends and I go every Thursday.
Capri is the place to be on Friday nights. Then again, it's a hole and I don't care if I ever go back. If you go you might get stabbed. Always problems around there.
Maxwell's, Governor's, Crown & Moose are all nice places to go for a beer and relax.
But certainly let me know when you're in town and I'll buy you a beer.

I agree! I was born and raised on PEI but just spent the last 5 years living in Halifax. The only thing Halifax is really good for is the indie music scene, but if thats not really vacation material. PEI and Cape Breton are your best shot at a great time.
On PEI there is the most amazing beach that isnt really a tourist spot. Basin Head its called. The sand sings when you rub your feet in it. The beach is huge, there is a bridge you can jump off and the current takes your right back to the beach. Great times.
Also there are great places like the wax museum, the buffalo ranch, pamure island ect.
sigh* "come play on my island"
Yeah, I've been living in Toronto the past couple years, but I did have the luxury of going back to the island for a couple months at the beginning of this summer. I grew up near Greenwich on the north coast (St. Peter's), and my parent's have a place right on the water, with a lot of land we own all around it. Lots of room to do whatever the heck I want... Unlike this accursed city!

"tanks bye. I'll be sure to take ya up on dat"
LOL at the Capri, I got banned for life from there somewhere around 1979-80. Good to here some things never change!

Magic baby. Magic
Farewell to Nova Scotia, your sea-bound coast, Let your mountains dark and dreary be. For when I am far away on the briny ocean tossed, Will you ever heave a sigh or a wish for me?
The sun was setting in the west,
The birds were singing on every tree.
All nature seemed inclined to rest
But still there was no rest for me.
Chorus
I grieve to leave my native land,
I grieve to leave my comrades all,
And my parents whom I love so dear,
And the bonnie, bonnie lass that I do adore.
Chorus
The drums they do beat and the wars to alarm,
The captain calls, and I must obey.
So farewell, farewell to Nova Scotia's charms,
For it's early in the morning and I'm far, far away.
Chorus
I have three brothers and they are at rest,
Their hands are folded on their breast.
But a poor simple sailor just like me,
Must be tossed and driven on the dark blue sea.
That being said, HD are you around to catch the game Friday night? It'll be the first time I would have seen my girlfriend in a month and a half but she's aware the Flames were here first.
You know it. I've only missed watching Flames 2 games in the last 4 seasons, so odds are I'm gonna be watching it. Let me know when your in town.

The Following User Says Thank You to HalifaxDrunk For This Useful Post:
Harbour hopper ftw
Buskers is usually good, but i don't jnow when it starts ( street festival)
Also the Maritimes has great golf courses
Fort louisberg? in cape breton is pretty neat
I figured I would give this thread a bump as I am going there with my little family on Saturday for a few weeks.
I have a few questions on some things that I have been doing some research.
Is the following worth the time if you are stretched for time
Fort Cumberland, st martins sea caves, reversing falls, port royal/fort anne (id love to go to all these places but am going for a wedding in PEI and that takes up almost 1/2 the days we have)
I grew up in Cole Harbour, N.S. Old people love the maritimes. They love the fall colours, old boats and lack of minorities. I left after finishing university and don't know why anyone would visit. I find it painfully boring.
I'm inclined to agree with Joynny199r. I also grew up in the Maritimes (moved to Calgary in 2002), and don't really see any appeal to the region at all (outside of Halifax which is a cool university town).
He's also bang-on with his comment about lack of minorities. That was by far the most striking thing that stood out for me on my first trip home after living in Calgary for several months. I recently looked at my old high school yearbook; in my class of ~400 graduating students, there were three visible minorities. THREE!

I'm a minority (half Indian half white), born in Montreal and we took a vacation out to halifax/moncton/cape when I was about 8 or 9. After a nice dinner took a long drive down the coast and stopped at a look about point. Couple guys came out waving a gun saying our kind isn't welcome in those parts.
My Folks have never been back, I went back once as a teenager for a hockey tournament, but just stayed in Halifax and didn't really feel any animosity. But we stayed on the Military base there and didn't venture out too too much. And I was surrounded by white hockey people
One heard few stories from black people who grew in up Nova Scotia that it was essentially a two class system, everyone was (Asian/Indian/Arab etc) was OK to be in white areas but really tried to push black people together and away from others.
With that said Newfoundland is bleeping awesome!!! But it's fairly far and expensive to get to from NB.
I've been coast to coast to coast in Canada, every Province and Territory, and I enjoy PEI the most. Its clean, friendly, and just pretty. Do a brewery tour, eat some seafood, and just relax.
Lived in Halifax and St Johns as a kid growing up at different points. Both are great. I like history related stuff when I travel and both provinces have extensive historical sites and just a lot of neat stuff.
Cabot Trail speaks for itself. Amazing.
I will admit I am bias towards Newfoundland as my mother and brothers are born there. It is one of the most unique places in North America. It's just a really awesome experience with a culture that is incredibly unique. It is rugged and beautiful.
Damn I just got back 2 weeks ago and was thinking while I was there I should find this thread(and look you up) I didn't have a whole lot of time though (wedding/family..etc) but I did get out to the old (Smooth Hermans) for drinks and dinner (new pub name escapes me but I think theres one in Halifax as well)
Anyway, I'll look you up soon as I'll be retiring down there soon enough...I hope anyway!
