I said, from personal experience of travelling all over the US and living here for the last 5 years...yes they do know about the Stampede, no matter how much you want to throw a temper tantrum about it. No matter how much you think it's just a marketing slogan, and no matter how much you hate the idea.
It's just the truth.

The CFR also draws thousands of American tourists.
You don't see Edmonton market it off as some World Class event.
Stop trying to make a freaking rodeo seem like a huge international event.
YOU deal with it.

And no, I'm not proud of that mall, hence the UGH. I'd rather Edmonton be known for something more meaningful than a mass consumerist monument. Yes, I can say with complete confidence that that monstrosity is the #1 tourist attraction in Alberta, and probably top 3 in Canada.
|
See, I just can't believe that. Show me the figures and I'll admit I'm wrong, but I have no idea why someone would go to a mall over somewhere in the Rockies. It makes no sense to me. What does it offer that other malls don't have? Submarine rides and dolphin shows?
|
I've read it with my own eyes, in an article. I can't remember where.
Check out Guiness. 20 million people visit West Edmonton Mall annually.
It's not just a regular mall. You have an idea how many Calgarians come to it?
Submarine Rides, World's largest Indoor Waterpark, Canada's fastest Go Karts, 1 million dollar acquired Sea Lions, Hotel, soon to be a 7000-10,000 seat arena, nearly 1000 shops and restaurants (you go shopping right? Tons of designer clothes to select from, FCUK (does Calgary have that?), Skating rink, Fantasyland hotel, World's largest Indoor Amusement park, and I could go on and on and on.)
You have to admit it's a awsome facility....people all over the world come to see it, when they tour Alberta.

Sure thing buddy.
And I'll never understand how anybody can be proud of that ridiculous mall. It's a dump. But I haven't been in it since that river ran through it last summer so maybe that washed away some of the dead dolphin smell.

LOL @ your jealousy.
Ridiculous mall? Hahaha, just shows how some Calgarians can be so jealous, and bitter, and never give credit where it's due.
Your last paragraph just explains how many Calgarians have an inferiority complex
Perhaps you buy froot-of-the-loom t-shirts, that's why you don't like the mall?

It's a shopping mall.
20 million people pass through it.
How many are repeat visitors say, from Sherwood Park? Do they count the staff for the A&W? Are there little lasers that do this accurate counting, or is it just a number that looks good to prospective tenants? If we're including traffice like, then Chinook Centre is the second most visited attraction in Alberta.
When I open up a brochure at my local Japan Travel Bureau office here I see brochures and information for tours to Calgary and Banff. In the little corner the Japan Travel Bureau website it says that "Calgary is a developed frontier town built on a can-do spirit. It mentions Calgary's confidence and says that it is well know as a cowboy city, and that Calgary was the host of the 1988 Winter Olympics.
Calgary - JTB Website (Japanese)
Of course Banff is also there, as any package to Canada from these guys that doesn't feature a stopover in Banff isn't a Canada package.
Banff
Those are the only two spots featured in Alberta. No Edmonton, no mall.
The other areas on the web site, just so you get an idea of travel demand to Canada from overseas from Japan:
Yellowknife (Auroras), Whistler, Ottawa, Calgary, Quebec City, Charlottetown, Toronto, Niagara Falls, Vancouver, Banff, Victoria, Montreal

Where the HELL did that pic come from? Or do I want to know?
West Ed: I'll admit, I've stayed there when I was working in the 'chuck. It was cheap, and it was 2 blocks from our office. To me, it:
- was in major need of an overhaul,
- had a dollar store for every Telus store, for every Sport Mart
- rented scooters to the elderly so they could see the same store over and over, but stop in at Stitches if they wanted
- had mirrors on the ceiling of the hotel rooms
- had theme rooms that were pick up trucks
- had a roller coaster that I remember killed a bunch of people
- had no decent restaraunts
but had lots of parking, and a shop that sold eclectic concert t-shirts and buttons.
I think we need a poll here. Where would you rather holiday....Banff or West Ed? While we're at it throw one up asking what you would rather host, the Winter Olympics or an IAAF event. Mods?

Seriously, do you think anyone, anywhere, is "jealous" of that mall? It's a shopping mall. A rundown, dated, crappy mall that just happens to be enormous. About a year and a half ago I had the pleasure of visiting "The Mall" and I felt like I was in a timewarp. I hadn't been there in 15 years but it was like I had never left.
I must be missing something because your "joke" about Fruit of the Loom isn't really working for me. It almost sounds like you are implying some pro-mall snobbery and that people who don't buy their clothes in a suburban shopping mall are somehow inferior or at least un-hip.

BOA is so 1980's, get over it. The cities themselves are smart enough to start marketing the ALBERTA advantage.....so why can't we all just get along.
Both cities are not huge urban centers. We are farmers, rednecks, oil workers, and a few white collar workers. Thats it.
I spend time each month in both cities, and wouldn't mind either place.

Had no good Restaurants?
Obviously you have no clue..
Obviously Banff is a better place to holiday, because nothing beats natural beauty. That said, there is no tourist attaction in Calgary that can compete in the same light as West Edmonton Mall.

You mean all those garbage eateries on Bourbon Street, next to Hooters and the "night club"? Or are you referring to the food court? If I wanted trash I'd go to Smitty's.
You should rephrase your last statement to "there's no mall the same size as West Ed in Calgary". You're telling me that people would go to West Ed over The Stampede, Canada Olympic Park, Eau Claire, even Millenium Skate Park if they had the choice? Different strokes for different strokes I guess, but I'd rather be outside than wander around a mall full of people crammed next to each other while a dolphin show goes on.

I think he means the "Elephant and Castle" in what seems like the basement.
Not on the menu but vital to the dining experience is the grand view of the indoor go-kart track and the free floor show called "MallRats Beat Up a Grocery Basket".

You have got to be kidding me.
Everybody coast to coast knows about the World's largest mall. Why the heck do you think there is a hotel in it?
Oh yeah, the Stampede. "Pack your bags honey, we're going to put our hillybilly hats and watch the rodeo at the Calgary Stampeeeeede!"
What's there really to see at the Olympic Park?? It's not like people across the country are rushing over to see it.
Pretty sad if Eau Claire is one of your best attactions.
Face it - people love and know about the Mall. It's a tourist mall - the more you visit, the less enjoyable it is, unless you're there for the shopping only. For a family visiting it for the first time, it couldn't be more enjoyable.
I bet you even enjoyed it the first time you were there, before you started seeing everything with red coloured glasses

Hey Sundeep. Ever hear of the Calgary Zoo? Soon to go throguh another $120 million dollar upgrad, expansion and renovation to become one of the top 5 zoos in the world? Does Edmonton have a zoo? Do they have animals besides a few dolphins and a sea lion stuck in the middle of a freakin mall! The Calgary Zoo is world renowned, and when this new plan is finished, will rank them at the top with other Zoo's like San Diego. Oh yes we may also bring in sea lions to our new arctic exhibit. Except the difference is they won't be trapped in a stale old fashioned mall.
On a side note, why don't you look up how many millions of dollars West Ed has lost, and how much government money has been used to save and help fix up the wearhouse...Why doesn't Edmonton put more money into fixing up their trailor parks, instead of some giant mass mall no one cares about.

20 million people annually and international tourists care about that mall.
If government money is used to help restructure it, doesn't that speak for itself how big of a tourist attraction it is?
Duh
Don't let your jealousy get in the way of your honest opinion.
To become one of the top 5 zoo's in the world? Since you're a big fan of sources, provide some. Ask anyone in Toronto whether they'd fly halfway across the country to go to the World's Largest Shopping Complex, or to watch furry creatures.
I've been to the San Diego zoo (it's called something else), and it's 10 * what the cowtown zoo is.
Now go cry me a river.

Restaurants that can be found (including clones) anywhere in Canada, from what I can tell. Julios, Hooters, Moxies, Spaghetti Factory, Red's, Tony Romas. Wow, what a great collection.
You're attatching Edmonton pride to a Mexican restaurant now too? Get real.

Yeah, Red's and Julios are found anywhere in Canada
Ditto for the Fantasyland hotel restaurant.
That Mexican restaurant is very popular from Calgarians and Saskatchewanians coming into that mall.

Have you ever been to the Calgary zoo? Have you seen there new state of the art, world class African exhibits? You want sources? Pick up the Calgary Sun or go to their website, and look under the archives from about 3 days ago. If your feeling frisky, why don't you write a letter to Zoo President and ask him yourself? I'm sure he would provide you with a very good reason why he would say that. A zoo is not only based on it's facilities, but also on their outreach program, conservation etc.
Give me some sources that claim West Ed has 20 million a year. Give me an explanation why West Ed's new slogan is a rip off of the Stampede. "Greatest Indoor show on earth".....check out their website if your don't believe me...lame...
