Nature Conservancy of Canada: they buy huge chunks of Canadian wilderness and then (here's the best part) leave them the hell alone.

Also United Way and until recently Greenpeace.

What we have done as an extended family is, in addition to whatever they individually do through the year, is instead of buying my idiot brother in law another POS present he doesn't need, we all pool that 'present money' and pick a charity for that year.
Last couple of years has been a pretty good chunk of change as we convince more family members to NOT buy each other gifts (kids excluded, they still get presents)
Each year has been a different charity; Stars, Food Bank, Inn From the Cold, Cancer Society
Makes it more Christmassy around our house.

Inn from the Cold is the only charity that gets a dime from me.

Pick a charity that does research for alzheimers. If you've had a grandparent lose his or her marbles, then you know why I'm suggesting it. As a bonus, there's a good chance you'll get it one day, so it's almost like investing in your future!

The cancer society (I've lost two family members to cancer and one more is likely) and Campus Crusade for Christ.

Haha I take it you haven't seen my thread on Nose Hill? I think there is an over abundance of Canadian wilderness... I'd see it as a pretty big waste of money to try to preserve more.

And FYI there is a charity connected with the Stanley Cup, can't think of the name of it atm, but a donation to the charity will get you a visit with the Cup for a couple of hours and an NHL alumni. Was a great night and a good cause.

I adopted a kid through Plan Canada. Kinda cool and much less overhead than World Vision, etc.

My local SPCA. I've always been a big supporter and will always be. They do a fantastic job. I just plain like animals more than people most of the time!

I also agree that a charity that deals with alzheimers is a good suggestion. If you don't know anybody yet dealing with it, chances are you will.

i typically support united way calgary.

my only volunteer time would be helping coach my sons hockey team - this would include a bunch of hours helping to evaluate the kids.

Kiva and CNIB

Why?

I like Kiva because it's actually loans instead of just donations for small business owners around the world. I've made 9 loans, 6 of which have been repaid in full and 3 which are currently in repayment.

CNIB - My dad lost his sight about 2 years ago and CNIB was really good as far as getting him some training/counselling on how to adjust to blindness. They also gave him a computer that talks to him which has been great.

Well, I found the perfect charity thanks to a PM from one of the members here and am super happy to have started donating. It's the Canadian Mental Health Association for anybody wondering. Thanks for the input everyone.
