Speaking of STARS, it says on their website that they flew more missions to Lethbridge (45), Brooks (35) and Red Deer (63) than Calgary (33).
Weird.

If I had more disposable income I might have a longer list. The RMEF does a lot of great work that affects not only wildlife, but humans as well.

Our whole office gives to the United Way. I think something like $20 comes out of my paycheck for it.
I don't know if it is my charity of choice, but it is my charity of convenience I guess you could say. If given a choice, I'd probably give to the cancer foundation as my dad and I stayed at one of their homes for a while when he was going through treatments. I should give back some.

I started a program here in Edson called Edson Kids in Sports Association.
the program is designed to provide financial assistance to those families that have children that want to participate in sports and dont have the financial resources to do so.
the program is very much like Kid Sport but because we are in a small rural area, it makes accessing the Kid Sport program a bit tougher. Hence the start up of Edson Kids in Sports. We probably help between 25-40 families a year.
I also help when I can with the Diabetes Association and Terry Fox run.

Easter Seals..I work for Easter Seals Bay Area..there are 100s of locations throughout Canada/the USA and I choose them to donate to (and work at) because they help so many adults and children with disabilities that otherwise wouldn't stand a chance.

But, seriously, I give via automatic payroll donations to the United Way, and last year, I shaved my head to raise money for the Terry Fox Foundation.

The Canadian Hemochromatosis Society. It's a little known genetic disorder that prevents the body from properly disposing of iron in the blood. It's easily dealt with if diagnosed early, but if not, the results are irreversible and devastating - cancer, arthritis, diabetes, and liver disease chief among them. It's had wide-ranging effects on my family, and I just lost an uncle to cancer brought on by Hemochromatosis.
And CPAWS (Canadian parks and Wilderness Society).

Each year for the past 5 or so have been:
United Way
Heart & Stroke
However this year, I'm going to stop giving to the United Way and instead pick a specific charity. I think that's a better way to go, less administration and I pick the cause.

United Way and Canadian Cancer Society. I'd like to get more involved with Engineers without Borders.
This isn't a charity of choice (yet) but I just wanted to make a plug for charities or organizations looking to rid 3rd world countries of landmines. Throughout my travels that include 3rd world countries, I've seen alot - starvation, child slavery, various diseases and sicknesses, poverty obviously - but far and away, the biggest travesty has to be landmines. Landmines leave former war-torn countries in a constant state of war, where the everyday dangours still lie whenever you step outside your house. Easily the most unfortunate and sad thing I have ever seen in my travels, with many victims being children.
I came across this link here, http://www.canadianlandmine.org/ - that might be a start for those who see landmines as something that needs alot of attention.

Amnesty International and Unicef. Occasionally Heart & Stroke as my parents are associated with the fundraisers.
Oh yah, and I always take all my empty bottles downstairs in a big garbage bag and leave them for the bums. I call it "Refund Relief", and I seriously thought about putting it down as a deduction on my taxes to see if the guys at Revenue Canada have a sense of humour, but then I realized I might as well just be phoning them up and requesting an audit if I did that, and save them the trouble of thinking it up for themselves.

Alberta Neurofibromatosis
www.albertanf.org
NF1 is the more common type of the neurofibromatoses, occurring in about 1 in 4,000 individuals in the United States. Although many affected persons inherit the disorder, between 30 and 50 percent of new cases arise spontaneously through mutation (change) in an individual's genes. Once this change has taken place, the mutant gene can be passed on to succeeding generations
My wife has NF so does my daughter and son. A good friend of mine from junior high who I am still friends with 22 years later, his son has NF. My wife has worked very hard to get ABNF off the ground and for that I applaud her. The Safeway downtown chose them as the charity that they would support this year and so far they have raised a nice chunk of change which will help their associations help others in Alberta that have NF. There are NF associations in most provinces so there is a lot of support. Right no they are trying to raise awareness, because I believe there are people who have NF that don't even know they have NF. My wife never found out until she was 25. Sorry to ramble

Kind of an old bump here but I want to start donating to a charity on a monthly basis where my account is debited automatically. I think I'd like to contribute to a charity that helps people with mental illness. Anybody have any suggestions?
