Yeah, pretty much.

At the most, a few colonies that are very strict with their 'rules.'

The majority of Hutterites don't have a difference.

I may be completely ignorant here, but I thought a Hutterite belief was that modern technology was evil. Does that not apply to motorized carriages?

No, hutterites often have the latest and greatest when it comes to technology. You are thinking of the Amish.

I wonder where you got that idea from.

While there certainly are some colonies that prohibit things like computers, TVs, radios, etc, etc....more and more are finally realizing the importance that technology plays with the work they do.

There are 3 groups of Hutterites. Lehrerleut, Dariusleut, and Schmiedeleut. The Lehrerleut are known as being the strictest, and those that take the biggest stand, or have the biggest pedestal when it comes to technology, and amongst the Dariusluet and Schmiedeleut it varies. Some are very open with just about everything....although it would always be filtered, and some are more conservative.

For the most part, the Dariusleut and Lehrerleut rely heavily on farming/agriculture for their income, while the Schmiedeleut are heavily into manufacturing. Some colonies, like Crystal Spring, Baker, Decker, Millbrook, Glenway and Springfield are known either Canada wide, North America wide, or in some cases, world-wide in their respective industries. Its also interesting to note that most of those websites weren't built by a professional designer. Most are made by people in each colony, usually girls who are encouraged to take classes.

So, its impossible to judge all Hutterites the same. I have been to many colonies through Canada and the US, from the HUGE potato farmers in Washington($30 mil + annual income)....to the big manufacturing colonies in Manitoba(shops that seem like they never end)....to the big farming colonies in Alberta/Sask. Where just about every acre of land you can see belongs to them.

They are all different. Even from colony to colony the differences are vast.

There are probably upwards of 200-300 colonies in the Calgary/Red Deer area.

Then there's the long extended vans they drive. They take up 3/4's of the side street when they angle park in High River, making it difficult to get down

Dude....big deal.

There are a lot better things to get worried about than an extended van.

Their modern tech taboo started changing about 50 years ago.

You should try getting down some of the downtown streets here where they angle park. I went to see my GP and couldn't get down the street as thier van and a pickup had blocked enough of the street that nobody could get down.

News to me as well. At our rocket launches, they will come out and spectate, and they have no problems with their photos being taken.

Not true- there's only about 170 colonies in Alberta total. Alberta does have the highest number of colonies in all of Canada, with Manitoba coming second.

I grew up very near to a Hutterite colony in Manitoba- my mom taught at it - this was a very progressive colony with up to date everything - and the kids were allowed to go to Grade 12 and some went on to post-secondary. Most of the people there were the sweetest, nicest people - and then just like with every community you get a couple of jerks and alcoholics. I know that they wouldn't have an issue with pictures, but then again the Manitoba colonies (Schmedieuleut) tend to be a bit more progressive than the other sects, I think?

What was the name of the colony? Chances are I know some people there.

Yeah, the Schmedieuleut are WAY more progressive. As a whole even.

Don't know if this has already been posted, but on the news tonight, they interviewed some hutterites that obviously don't mind being on camera. There was one girl in a black dress with a head scarf on and she said, "if they don't want their picture taken, they should go join the amish". It was just kind of funny.

Well, to bump the old thread.

Quote:
CALGARY - The Supreme Court of Canada has decided not to give the southern Alberta Hutterite colonies fighting the province’s photo licence requirement another chance to prove their case in court.

The nation’s top court dismissed an application to re-hear an appeal of its ruling that upheld the Alberta government’s right to make photo licences mandatory for all drivers.

Good news.
