The verdict is down, the Hutterites lost their case about not having photos on driver's licenses.

Exempt them from driving then.

Whoops, didn't see the supreme court ruling was done. Nice to see common sense prevail.

If they want to get a passport they still have to provide a photograph and frankly I don't see that EVER changing... religious freedom or not.
My wife works for Passport Canada and she sees Hutterites in there applying for passports all the time.

This is VERY interesting and will have a HUGE impact on Canadian jurisprudence in regarsd to freedom of religion cases in Canada. The polygamists in Bountiful have got to be quaking in fear now. The prosecution just got a lot more confident.

Yeah, they do.

The Hutterites involved in this stupid 'case' to be exempt from having photos on their driver's license represent a very small group within the Hutterite community.

The majority have Passports with pictures. And none of them complain about it.

I don't understand why you wouldn't want your picture on a license? Life is probably so much easier with it than without, religious rules or not.

Call me a Shutter-ite; I'll have my photo taken any day.

It has to do with an Old Testament Commandment. It has to do with statues or self portraits that wealthier individs used to do back then for self adorization. Even for those who live via the Old Testement its pushing it.

I have no problem with it, I am biased as I have had to deal with different colonies and have had nothing but terrible experiences with them vis a vi buisness transactions.

There are no legitimate religious beliefs. What's the point of having laws if you can exempt yourself from them based hazy interpretations of old books?

Religious need to be at the bottom of the list. The supreme court has decided that my security rights are above your religious rights, and that's the way it should be.

The poor Hutterites are now claiming hardship as they have to choose between thier faith or driving.

Here's an idea...They can go back to the horse drawn carraige.

I'd make 'em get a license for that, but I'm a bit of a dick.

In all fairness I don't think it is all Hutterites claiming hardship. Just one particular colony.

No way they will do that. Have you seen some of the trucks they drive? Pretty fancy and expensive.

I see them all the time in High River as they come to do thier shopping. Problem is they're going to have to choose between thier beliefs and driving.
