I'm no theologian, and I'm not a catholic, but my understanding is that Benedict was the rightmost of all the candidates being considered for the job. There might not be a difference of policy, but it's hard to imagine JPII hectoring Canada for our liberal social policies, isn't it? I find it hard, anyway.
You raise an interesting point, though. If the pope gets his inspiration from God--then why is god more conservative when Benedict is pope than he was when JPII was? Food for thought, anyway.
