Depends what you mean by old. If they are pre 1975 you _might_ be able to sell them to a store in town (depends what they are and what condition they are in). If they are post 1975, if you throw them out you will at least save the gas money you would waste driving around trying to sell them. Actually, there are a few (very very few) 80s books that are ok, as long as they're in near perfect condition. If they are 90s books or non-perfect (I'm not joking when I say perfect, if you read them, they're probably not perfect) 80s books, take them to a recycling bin near you.

The signed book fad is pretty much dead. Most collectors view signitures as a defect. A signed Spawn 1 is essentially worthless, I think there are more signed ones in town than unsigned.

I've got Watchmen, V for Vendetta and Sandman.
Heard that Maus, Dark Knight, Sin City, Y the Last Man are also quite good.

This is an ancient thread but with the number of comic book movies recently and Yeah Baby's post about stupid Spiderman and stupid resetting the timeline I thought I'd give it a bump.
Just curious if anyone still reads X-men, or has since "the Twelve" storyline from quite a few years ago. I had a fairly impressive run of X-men, Wolverine and Spawn but then I just quit buying comics one day. Stops at about X-men 100, UXM 380, Wolverine 155 and Spawn 99.
I've since gotten into the habbit of picking up a graphic novel/TPB about once a month. I was actually just at the North Phoenix Comics a week ago or so and dropped $70.
I'm really interested in reading X-men/Wolverine titles since 2000 or so when I stopped collecting but don't really know where to start. Generally I just wander around for a long time then pick something at random that looks good. Sometimes it works (I loved House of M and Astonishing X-men: Gifted) and sometimes it fails (X-men: Eve of Destruction sucked IMO).
Some stuff I love:
Anything Loeb and Sale - Haunted Knight, Long Halloween, Dark Victory, Catwoman: When in Rome, Superman for all seasons, Wolverine/Gambit, Spiderman: Blue, Daredevil: Yellow, Hulk: Grey
The 2 volumes of the Batman: Hush storyline with Loeb and Jim Lee.
Wolverine: Not Dead Yet, Wolverine Origins: Born in Blood
Avengers Forever
Anything by Ennis and Dillon (or either one of them) - Preacher (the entire 9 volume collection), Punisher: Welcome Back Frank, Punisher Max: In the Beginning (just Ennis)
Batman: The Killing Joke
Superman/Batman Vol 1 & 2 Jeph Loeb again. Vol 2 is worth it just for Michael Turner's art.
Batman: Year One by Frank Miller et al: Best Batman ever IMO.
300
Just finished Justice vol 1 of 4 which is fantastic because it features full art by Alex Ross which is always phenomenal (even if he is just painting over Braithwaites pencils). Is Earth X, Universe X and whatever the next one was any good?
Of course Marvels, Kingdome Come, Watchmen, V for Vendetta, Dark Knight Returns and the aforementioned Batman: Year One are all awesome. And I may very well continue with the Wolverine Origins and the House of M stories.
Just wondering what anyone else likes? Any good X-men TPBs you want to suggest from the last 9 or so years?
Like I said the work by Whedon and Cassaday on Gifted was excellent. I've also heard Grant Morrisons run was pretty good but haven't read any of it.
What about the New Avengers by Bendis? Or the run on one of the Superman titles by Bendis and Quitely? What about Bendis' run on Daredevil? I've read Guardian Devil and liked it (the run by Kevin Smith) but don't know where to go next.
Anyone read Civil War?
I'd also like some good and fairly recent (ie later than mid 90s) TPBs for Iron Man, FF, Silver Surfer and the Hulk. Of all those I have only 1 title and that is Hulk Grey. For some reason I never got into lots of Marvels core heroes and just stuck to X-men and Wolverine.
Knowing a few solid storylines or even just good issues would be nice because I can find TPBs that way.
And as I'm sure you can tell I'm not a huge DC fan except for Batman and Superman and even then...
As you can see I tend to switch it up a lot and don't follow a lot of titles real close. I usually just buy volume 1 of the Trade and then if it is really good I'll buy more. That was one thing I liked about Loeb and Sale stories and Preacher is that they are mostly self contained and can be read and re-read without needing to read 1000 back issues and crossovers to understand the storylines, continuity etc.

There's no way I can keep up with comics and I don't want to set up a box or something at a comic store. I don't have the effort to do it. I just don't know what to read. Sick of superhero stories and American comics in general. I prefer the long drawn out stories in Japanese manga but hate most of the genres (fighting, wierd fantasy, high school drama mixed with magic, etc. all stupid kiddy stuff). Civil War and Secret Invasion showed me Marvel was utter and stupid crap not even worth reading. At the same time, Annihilation and Planet Hulk were very good since it got away from the whole implausibility thing I have with an earth full of people in spandex tights with powers. I have the same issue with DC and it's constant events of Countdown to Infinite Crap.
I'm not a kid anymore, my mind asks too many questions when you present me with a world of superheroes dressed in tights and all having powers and living among people and everything working out still like it does in our real world when their world should have completely changed. It gets ######ed quick and trying to engage that in an adult manner you get Civil War - terrible idea executed even worse. That Day of M or whatever in X-Men helped it bit since it purged most of the mutants of the planet.
I will read Spidey every now and then since he's pretty cool after they got rid of Mary Jane the stupid deadweight that was ruining him for 15 years. It's another reason why Superman is stupid to read, he's married to Lois. That makes him automatically dull. I only like the throwback ones where it's Clark Kent and Lois making fun of him, etc. banter with a bit of tension between the two, etc. that you see every now and then like in Birthright or something.
Give me a comic with a good serious premise in a believable world about serious characters doing real things...living every day life, having drama, having relationships, etc. No super powers, no secret plots to destroy the world, etc. It doens't have to be boring. You can have military, spies, sports (I've like a few sports mangas here and there), history, etc. I also hate a lot of the art in current comics. I don't like the prevalent American art style or how they just color everything with computers. I loved American comics in the 80s. Things had a gritty realistic way to how things were drawn. Now artists today have this annoying style I can't stand.
I checked out the Terminator Salvation Prequel comics and the art is terrible. I hate this sort of non-realistic saturday morning (of the late 90s) look. I can't buy the gritty world you are selling me if the characters look all cartoony.
I like 1980s style comic book art and I also like manga style art (to a degree). Case in point, here is some art from the original origin of Jason Todd in Batman from the 80s compared to a recent version of his origin:

Fantastic art, focus on pencil and inking and shading and detail. Crisp lines, well proportioned characters. Realistic look.

Jason Todd's new origin - ARRRGH UGLY UGLY UGLY. Terribly cartoony look. Terrible lazy drawing style. No details. Computer fill tool and photoshop effects. I realize that is an extreme. There are still plenty of comic book artists that I like and Batman looks different comic to comic...but more often than not, every few issues of many comics, I am finding this style and once I see it, I stop reading the book immediately.

i used to collect along time ago. Sold off most of mine but I still have 2 boxes that I'll probably never rid of.
My prize comics being: Flash #1, Dark Knight #1, Wolverine #1 and Detective Comics #27 (if you know this comic book, you'll absolutely know why it's in my SDB - my Aunt, of all people, gave this to me when I was in my teens and I've been happy ever since!)

Seconding Sandman... pretty epic story arc.
And in the vein of Preachers awesomeness...
...if you haven't read The Punisher (MAX) by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon (and a few contributors) you're missing out. The first 5 trades are gold.

My favorite comic/manga at this point is a manga called Eatman.
It's very hard to describe. It's in sort of a post-apocalyptic yet recovered world with strange cultures and technologies. There is a main character for reasons to be revealed, is able to eat anything (even greater mass and volume than his own body) and reconstruct it into something else through his hands. He works as a mercenary or jack of all trades and there are long story arcs as well as short storeis throughout the many volumes with the one running story about his past and the resolution of his future. It's both hilarious and very tech noir and cute yet frightening. Sadly, it's never been translated into English aside from some rare fan made work with bad english.

Anyone here read "The Boys"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Boys_(comic)
When my GF comes home and asks me what I've been reading.... It's almost safer to say "Jenna Jameson Hon"..... Not sure if anything in comics compare to this type of comic. It does not follow the comic code.

I have the first 15 or so issues. At first I thought it was funny but it got a little too over the top for me. It seemed Ennis was going for shock value as opposed to trying to write a good story.
