The original quote was the Islander are "much better".
The Flames had 96 points last year, the Islanders had 82.
Even if we try to look at things on paper, the fact that the Flames were 14 points better last year, largely with the same squads, makes it hard to defend a statement that NYI is "much better".

Please hockey gods. Let the Flames score more than 2 goals. I don’t ask for much.

Yes, look at it fairly. The Islanders has 82 points last year, the Flames had 96. Like I said, let's not bring facts into this.

Well not anymore after you jinxed him. A 4-1 would be nice though.

That's an entire different question. To win this year? Long-term? What are we talking about?
Very little about their roster impresses me. Why would automatically say you would take their roster over the Flames? Neither is great from my POV.

The only players currently on the Islanders I would build around are Schaefer and Sorokin, and I would think twice about Sorokin since he's already 30 years old.
We have a much younger Wolf and Parekh who are comparable. The prospect cupboards are similar yet different. I think the Islanders have a couple more high end players, but the Flames have much better depth throughout the prospect base.
I don't think I would trade places with the Islanders at all.

Not a chance. Like I said, some people just want to push the agenda this team is the worst.

Those 'expected win' odds are pretty demoralizing.

If the Flames win tonight? I'll be happy for Mr. Cooley and the gang!
If the Flames lose tonight? I'll be overjoyed for the two massively important, momentum building Gavin McKenna points!
Either way, it's a great day for Flames hockey!

Well that's the truth in that the Islanders are not much better than anyone.
But the reality is also that the NHL has so much parity that I feel like between the teams that were 12th -30th in the NHL last year there is not much difference, especially with season to season variation, injuries, roster changes, etc
Ottawa
Minnesota
St Louis
Calgary
New Jersey
Montreal
Vancouver
Utah
Columbus
Detroit
Rangers
Islanders
Pittsburgh
Anaheim
Buffalo
Seattle
Boston
Nashville
Philadelphia
Those 19 teams could finish in any order this year and it wouldn't surprise me at all. Really only the Blackhawks and Sharks feel like teams that are still guaranteed to be bad again.

I am happy with a good effort and either a win or a regulation loss. The loser point keeps us in the mushy middle (and carries the same sting as a loss).

Exactly. So the Islanders are not much better than the Flames. I would say a tad below.

Schrödinger's goalie tonight.
Cooley on the bench is either best or worst goalie in the world.
As soon as you observe him in the crease, the fate is set.
Best or worst tonight? We should get a poll.
I'll say best, because he has given us little to be optimistic about this calendar year. So he will do precisely the opposite. Flames win by shut out.

I’d swap rosters with the Isles.
Schaefer is shaping up to be Norris-calibre elite. He already leads the Isles and NHL rookies in average ice time (23:18 per game). The only other 18-year-old in the past 25 seasons with at least 25:00 in two of his first three career games was Victor Hedman (2009-10). He’s already one of the best-skating defencemen in the NHL, tops among D in 20-plus mile per hour speed bursts, and 7th among all players in the entire NHL. His defensive game at every other level of hockey has also been very good. The odds are against the Flames drafting a player of his calibre in their rebuild.
In Ritchie, Eiserman, Eklund, and Aitcheson, they have good prospect depth - making three picks in the first round this year was and nabbing Ritchie for Brock Nelson was a windfall. I think Calgary has better overall prospect depth, but not by a huge amount, and Schaefer at the high end tips the scales for the Isles.
And the Isles have more valuable assets to move in a rebuild. Pelech, Pageau, and Barzal or Horvat would be easy to move for picks and prospects. I think they’d return more than Andersson + Coleman + Kadri.

This is my view going into the season. Hopefully seeing the kids come in and progress would definitely be great, regardless of the wins/losses.
I’d take a 1-3 or 1-10 start over a 2-2 or 5-5 too.
Either be really good or really bad at this stage. No point flirting with another 9th finish this year given that we own our own pick.
