This can’t be the way the Flames operate. Young players shouldn’t have to beat out PTO veterans. Young players, if within 25-50% as good as the PTO, should get the roster spot. That’s the opportunity to grow cost. Show a willingness to take a hit when it comes to on-ice team success as a development cost for the young players.
If the Flames get back into this business of having to make the youths beat off the veterans at every corner just to get an opportunity, it’s unlikely they’ll ever get that opportunity. Veterans should have to be SIGNIFICANTLY better than the youth to even be considered. The veterans have to tell the story to the organization that they’re the better long term investment - it should be harder for the aged depth players to earn a spot than the youth.
…that said, give Barrie a contract and trade Andersson.

That's a mutual thing if Barrie earns a spot. Flames have tons of cap and aren't keen on term so it's a natural fit for both sides expectations.

Show 'em you're worth it, and you'll get a contract.

I don't see Barrie as blocking any prospects who should be in the NHL. The RH defencemen on the Flames are Weegar, Andersson, Miromanov, Pachal, Brzustewicz and Parekh. I think Brzustewicz should be in the AHL and Parekh should return to junior, (only because he is ineligible for the AHL). Therefore, Barrie is really only in Pachal's way. That's not a big deal to me.

Can't help but think he's also a contingency plan in the event a Rasmus Andersson trade pops up.

This is what I think as well.
RH d-man is already pretty crowded with Andersson, Weegar, Miromanov, and Pachal on the main roster, and Parekh potentially wanting to make a push for at least 9 games too.
But If somebody meets the asking price for Andersson or Weegar then you have a replacement lined up that is at least a serviceable NHL dman. .

Seems like he'll get the contract given our personnel on the blueline. If he does I hope he has a solid year and gets us a return at the deadline.
Although him being a contingency plan for someone else getting shipped out makes sense too.

I like having Barrie on a PTO as insurance. Flames have Pachal, Hanley and Solovyov as potential 6-7 guys. Pachal and Hanley were both waiver fodder last season and Solovyov is that as well if he doesn't take a step this year and earn a spot. Not to mention the Flames have Miromanov in their top 5, who has barely played in the NHL. That's a lot of question marks. Having a guy like Barrie on a PTO is great insurance incase someone takes a step back or gets injured, and if some of these guys take steps forward, or a kid comes out of nowhere, you're not on the hook to keep the guy. Win-Win situation for Conroy.

Nothing wrong with bringing in a professional. Calgary's D is quite thin.

PTOs are no risk opportunities to audition a player. And once in a blue moon they work out. What isn’t there to like?

Tyson Barrie could easily become one of our 5 Giordanos

No downside in signing Barrie. Will get fake shot Andersson off the pp and let him focus on 5 on 5.

Nope nope nope
Miraculously this will eventually become the NHL contract that will solidify this team and propel us on an extremely deep Cinderella playoff run after edging out the oilers for 8th place in the regular season
(After such a tough summer a fan can dream right?)

Who's his agent?
Sometime I think teams give PTOs to players just to build good relationships with agents. Give one of their free agents a stage to get their name in the news cycle, and a spotlight to show their stuff.
Then the next time they have a free agent that the Flames are interested in, the agent might be more inclined to speak well of the organization.

Could also be his old Junior coach doing him a favour.
It looks like his agent's only other NHL client is Jamie Benn (who also played under Huska in Kelowna with Barrie and Backlund).

Zero downside to this. Bring him in, sign him to a cheap one year deal, bulk up his stats on the PP and trade him at the deadline. Easy peasy.

Any news on Calen Addison? He has many of the same warts as Barrie, but is only 24.
