Seems smart to me.
This is what gets me - the Flames should be doing this. The Flames should not be adding to the team, and they have cap space. Where’s the clever management from our team?

The team we’re competing with is doing this stuff. Probably speaks to one team being honest/realistic with their expectations for this season while the other is not.

I hope Tampa demolishes the Leafs first. Yet another year not getting out of the first round.

WE need to sell.
No one is selling mid to high 1sts.
This is going to be amongst the very latest 1sts in the draft.

But also, because the Flames are not good.

Good luck Hathaway. Wish we still had him...

The idea is smart but what is a 4th and 5th? Boston has to be very excited about the depth they added. Toronto too. Washington and St Louis added some serious picks for guys they weren't keeping. Trades did not go down without the Wild's help.

My question is why Arizona, Buffalo, Anaheim did not get in on the action? They have even more cap space. My guess is they are holding the valuable asset of cap space for a better return. I guess we will see if these teams stick it to other buyers closer to the deadline or not. 4th and a 5th just seems like poor returns for a valuable asset.

Why? At that stage of the draft it's not different.
A late 1st is a late 1st. The value doesn't change much draft to draft at that stage.
I've been an advocate for the 2023 1st, but people are getting tunnel vision about it.
It's an amazing draft at the top end with 3 guys that would go first overall most years + a 4th that would go 1st overall in almost every year if not for the Russian factor.
And it's got a lot of talent, particularly within forwards, through the teens.
After that - I don't think it's much different.

3 of their 4 best forwards are 34, 36, and 37 years old.

BOS has a 0.813 pt % right now through 56 games, on pace for the highest pts % in the cap era.

2013 Blackhawks did .802 in the 48 gp season
2019 TBL did .780

They should trade every pick they have if they think it makes their team better this year.

But is a 5th going to move the needle. Deadline is still 2 weeks away. I hope we hold out for more than a 5th with our additional cap space.

There's a very good chance they will at least beat the wild card team, even if they don't win the Cup the odds that a draft pick after 20th overall will be an impact player is not very high

Yep, they loved Thornton, and I'd see similar.

Their core is aging. They're having a dominating season, in the much tougher conference. If I were a fan of their's I'd be keen, especially if they go on a longer run. I imagine both acquisitions would be more keen to return at reasonable dollars, which the Bruins seem to excel at signing.

It's weird reading he's a depth defenseman. He's been top pair defenseman, since he won the cup with them.

Wild doing good work.
Why exactly are we not doing this too?

Can you even sell if there is a remote chance you will make the playoffs and can you sell when you have Ovechkin and Oshie? Now is the time to go for it. Perplexing move planning for the future.

Remeber all the talk on this board to pick up Orlov off waivers a few years ago. How he blossomed to a top 4D.

As someone else said Hathaway will fit in with the Bruins like a glove. That's a great landing spot for him.

Unless this is a draft like 2003 or 2015 and it does seem like it was being hyped like that type of draft.
