For the few that are not happy with this. Let me spell it out for you P-T-O... Maybe I should extrapolate. Professional Tryout.

It is only a tryout.

You know those players you watch on other teams that you think are pretty okay players? Cody Eakin was that for me when he was with the Stars.

I've been pretty familiar with him since he was in junior, and also the WJC. He has some heart.

Lines won't match this, but the Flames forward depth chart.

Huberdeau-Lindholm-Toffoli
Mangiapane-Kadri-Coleman
Dube-Backlund-Rooney
Lucic-None-Lewis

They have Pelletier, Ruzicka, and Scwindt ready to try and crack the roster. Expect more PTOs to add security and generate competition. It would be silly not to.

I'd rather give a young guy a shot.
This in no way interferes with young guys getting a shot. Every team signs PTOs for camp. They need additional skaters to make the numbers work.

I would be shocked if Cody Eakin made the team.

y'know who I might've PTO'd before Eakin?

He can win some faceoffs. That’s about it.

There is a reason he is on PTO. He is Ritchie bad

His hair has been around since the 80s. That's probably why.

Well I think it’s a PTO, so there’s a long way between a PTO and playing any meaningful games for the Flames. As for the player, I thought Eakin was absolutely crushed in the two COVID seasons and that’s a part of why his analytics are so bad. He rebounded defensively last year, but he’s a black hole offensively. He makes Nordstrom look like an offensive player, and that’s saying something.

Finally, you know who else had terrible analytics that we signed and all made fun of… Gudbranson! This might be a similar story where the coach/management see something we don’t, or it’s just a warm body for all the preseason games.

I think Gudbranson was lightning in a bottle. He had a perfectly solid year as a bottom-pair guy here, but I think there's a pretty good chance he goes back to being a largely ineffective player in Columbus. Still can't believe he got that contract, but good on him.

Yep, I think Sutter could have got the same out of him with the same sheltered minutes. But the cost was too high and he is very unlikely to replicate that anywhere else.

My prediction is Columbus hopes he'll be a non sheltered top 4 defenseman and he'll get exposed badly, requiring them to drop him down and shelter his starts and line matches and then they'll look at his contract and go "good god, what have we done!".

My prediction is Columbus will have no idea what to do with Gudbranson and Gaudreau / how to effectively manage them and it will work out poorly for them.

Or at least not make much of a difference on where they land in the standings.

Right, because Darryl Sutter just hates it when his teams score goals and win games.

I bet he’s on the top line with Gaudreau and Monahan by the 10 game mark.
