Screw him. I can’t believe he forced us into this. Good riddance.

The Villain: 13 loved Calgary so much that he had trouble letting go and only decided to leave last minute because family convinced him.
The Hero: 19 negotiated his last contract to set him up for this day. Easy to tell them he wanted out because he was never really attached to Calgary.
What the eff is going on? Like, I can see how you could criticize Johnny for being less professional, but people act like he's a traitor. Johnny literally cared more about Calgary than Chucky did.

Agreed. Johnny cared more about the Flames than Tkachuk ever did, but Tkachuk ended up the one handling things like a professional while Gaudreau's actions were emotional.

My issue is not with the fact that both players wanted out, my issue is how it was handled by one party in contrast to the other.

I don’t see it as pettiness
Tkachuk had options to simply walk to free agency and pick his landing spot
He worked with the Flames to give them a real chance making a good deal and have this be a win win
I respect that
Johnny was twice the player but handled his departure as badly as you can.

If Gaudreau wanted to be a career Flame he would still be in Calgary.

He did, but he also had one hell of a season, and then gave the team time to move him.
If the guy was always going to leave, he literally did all he could to help the Flames maximize the return.
Props to him. IMO handled professionally.
Unlike his buddy Johnny who I hope gets booed everytime he is on the ice in Calgary.

It's exactly because Johnny seemed more attached which made it more difficult. With Tkachuk it was always business first, he was always upfront about this, and that's exactly why he was able to craft a situation that was able to work out for both him and the team
Johnny let his heart get in the way and that resulted in heartbreak
I still love both, niether are the villian to me

Yes, everyone knew Tkachuk wants to get to UFA to leave
Johnny was last minute change of mind or family influenced

Tkachuk gave us some awesome moments and a great parting gift. I hope he does well in Florida and have nothing negative to say about him.
Let's take the Gaudreau talk elsewhere.

Can't speak to pettiness and we're getting off of what the thread was designed for but the one, albeit small, saving grace with Johnny is I don't think his intent was malicious. I truly believe it was just an inability to make a decision.
Anyway, I wish both of them all the individual success in their careers. I truly thought both would be lifelong Flames.
Driving down 16th yesterday and saw a guy walking into the Pawn Shop with a Gaudreau jersey, how fast things change.

Thank-you Matthew.
Great memories and terrific way to exit as a professional. That was as classy a way of telegraphing your plans and helping the team asset protect.
You will get applause from me when playing us and I will even wear my Tkachuk jersey in honor.
I would even go as far as saying it softens the stink of Gaudreau signing since I know Gaudreau played a major role in your massive season that helped turn this trade into more than we all had hoped for. So thank-you Johnny as well!

Gotta be honest, I'll miss the Gaudreau's and the Tkachuk's in the city. We've been given fun memories by both families. Guy Gaudreau was Daddy Hockey around here and The Tkachuk's, especially Brady were utterly incredible as fans for us this post season.
Small things, but important.

Tkachuk has never done anything for the benefit of anyone else than himself. He wanted to get an 8 year deal coming off a career season. He's still picking his landing spot remember and the reality is that if he went to UFA next year he could have found himself in the same situation as Johnny where the Blues couldn't fit him in and he would have to settle for 7 years in another place. This way he's in one of his preferred destinations and he gets an 8 year deal. It's a big win for him and I'm sure the Tkachuks were celebrating last night like they won the lottery. I respect that the Tkachuks are first and foremost businessmen that have no attachment to any team or teammates but to insinuate that he did any of this for the Flames is pretty naive.
Johnny would have handled his departure a lot better had he had no attachment to the Flames like Tkachuk but he's a human being that had deep feelings for the fans, the city, and the organization. He eventually elected to do what was best for his wife and her family but it's just so strange to see a player that loved the organization vilified while a guy that never wanted to be a Flame is getting respect like he did any of this for anyone but himself.

This 2016 draft class has already yielded a lot of big contracts and a few top players who have moved. If the Oilers have to move on from snot boy, Keller and Matthews will be the only two guys with their original team in the top 10 picks.
Tkachuck had some moments for sure. As skilled around the net as anyone I can remember with his hands and ability to get to those places. But I would be wary of a guy who's skating is this sub par and how that will age in a league that seems to get a bit faster every year.

Is there a “Thank you Johnny” thread?
If not, I’m sure we’re fine to talk about both of them here.
