Amazing deal for the Leafs.
I can see why he'd prefer to be in Toronto - he's from there, but there's also way less pressure because he has no history with the franchise.
In Calgary he'd be returning as a former leader/face of the franchise who isn't the leader or face any more. It would likely be a bit strange for him.

Taking a swipe at Iginla's holdout? Forgetting that Giordano decided to go to Russia to play while holding out for a one way contract?

Gio is a legend here but ya, time to move on. That would have just made naming the next captain awkward.

I could see Gio doing it, though maybe he’ll be like Thornton who took a $2M contract before the last 2.

Man I hope someone isn't being billed the time you take to stroke your own ego.

Nothing to do with my ego - all to do with someone else's who said "no chance".
But thanks for the input.

I'm surprised he took so little, but he probably really loved the idea of a two year deal. And Toronto was probably the only place he'd sign.

I think he would retire unless he went to Toronto. He really doesn't have a lot to prove, unless he chases a cup, and he could always approve a trade at the TDL to go to a contender. His contract makes him a really attractive rental.

Tkachuk and Gaudreau, actually. And not thinking of Russia, when he was barely an NHLer, but 2010, when he could've waited for the UFA sweepstakes, but chose to sign at the beginning of the year...

Speaking of cheap players I'm still pissed we never picked up Corey Perry when he was free on waivers. That was a big swing and a miss.

Just watch Tre pick him up next year by giving up a second rounder! I pretty much said the same thing when he and Tiffoli were picked up via free agency by Montreal during the pandemic! Things don't seem to come free for the Flames!

It's been widely reported that Tree has been after Toffoli for a long time. He had to choose to sign here.
He didn't.

Did you not remember all the negative comment about signing Perry? Did you not remember the amount of comment saying if Flames sign Perry, they're not sure it a team they want to cheer for?

In a parallel universe, I wonder if Giordano retires in Calgary and ends up living in Calgary for the rest of his life? He always seemed to love Calgary and his family had a lot of roots in the city thanks to being there for so long, but with the move to Seattle and then a trade to Toronto where his parents are, it probably made the most sense for him to just stay put in Toronto now forever. I wonder if he is a bit hurt that he was left unprotected?

Said by someone who constantly casually brings up his “billing rate” as something that seemingly proves he’s smarter than everyone else lol.
If your purpose was to simply expose another poster as being wrong, you could have omitted your post from the thread. Adding that exposed your additional intention.

LOL. I never ever bring up my billing rate. People bring it up about me, Please show me the posts where I brought it up. And I included my post because it was the middle post of the three post conversation. Adding that included the context.
The intention was to revive that discussion and show how events turned out.
