anyways I'll stand by my irrelevant point that Iggy was by far the best player on the team when he was named Captain
I also agree that those 2 players were 1a/1b and everyone else was a distant 5 in the 04 run

Oh, you meant on at the time he was named. Yes that’s correct and in fact the other poster was incorrect when IIRC he said Iggy wasn’t captain in the miracle run.
Anyhoo, doesn’t matter, and yes, you are correct.

Wasn't that one of the first things Sutter did when he joined the team. Take the captaincy away from Conroy and give it to Iginla.

Conroy gave it up IIRC but that’s according to him. Maybe Sutter asked nicely.

Unless you're his agent, I am not putting a lot of weight on your opinion here

Joe Thornton has signed, in the last 2 years, a $700K and $750K contract. Similar deals: Spezza, Chara, Perry, Yandle, Parise. For the most part, these are to stay with a team (or return) or to go home like Spezza. Or sometimes to play for a top team for a last kick. I could see Gio doing it, though maybe he’ll be like Thornton who took a $2M contract before the last 2.

Yeah, no chance he goes from 6.75 to 1 million. He can get 2 to 3 million on a one year deal. I agree if he drags out his career after that then something close to 1 million is possible.

Ideally we bring back both Gaudreau and Tkachuk, and won’t have much more than that for our bottom pair— The luxury of this seasons $5m 3rd pairing will, be sacrificed

So you’re suggesting he goes elsewhere and uproots his family twice in two years, for an extra $1-2m to add to his already $59m career earnings?

Yeah, then he can go sign his 2 to 3 million with another team.

Why not, players do that all the time.
If the Flames do want him they are not going to low ball him by offering him $1 million per season. If they think so little of him I doubt they will even bother to offer him a contract.
Players often don't take highly discounted salaries to remain on teams where they were integral players in the past. They often sign somewhere else if they want to do that. Using the players from GioForPM's post, Spezza, Chara, Perry, Yandle and Parise all took their discounted contracts on different teams.

Sometimes they do to remain. And sometimes for a contender or their actual home town. Chara went back to his draft team. I’ve seen a few players go back to their previous long time team.
Selanne went back to the Ducks on the cheap.

My issue with bringing Gio back at trade deadline would be the risk of upsetting the apple cart. Team has been incredible without him. Maybe it would create rifts in the dressing room. Risk is too high. Love what Gio was as a Flame. Sometimes best to keep the past where it is.
If we're just bringing in depth I'd vote to look elsewhere.

I hope for a few things to happen.
If naming a captain I look to everything I've seen and heard from other teams , players, coaches that this new captain offers in terms of leadership.
Tanev was highly regarded by ALL before coming here. He's done everything and more and to me deserves the captaincy more than anyone else on the team.
I know he was just traded here #73 but his ex coach said he was the captain even without wearing the C in Montreal....let's see where and how things continue to progress of course but I don't think coaches say these things lightly....i wonder what Sutter would say in private?
Lastly....Mangiapane....I love this kid. Who doesn't? Seriously. An engine that doesn't quit and he is in my mind one of the top 3 200foot players on this team.
He was highly regarded when playing for Canada and named MVP for anyone forgetting.
I used to think Tkachuk was a natural for captain but there's still some selfishness in his play IMO and it doesn't belong to a player who doesn't put team first over personal achievements and the need for frequent attention . He needs to show the willingness to skate away from BS even if he thinks he can draw a penalty for a PP.
If not one of these 3 leave it vacant.
Sutter has a handle on things and maybe behind thr scenes someone is already apprenticing for the spot......and there's allot of good leaders in that room to do it all by committee anyway.
Our record indicates this as well.....2022 has this fan damn excited for future possibilities.

Not sure if mentioned already in the thread, but Coleman would be my dark horse pick.
- well spoken
- plays hard
- 2 cup rings
- has the most term left of any roster player
