He was the most recognizable name amongst a pool of castoffs and spare parts.

Who remembers expansion team captains anyway? Is there a wing at the HHOF?

I get it. You need to be able to market players to the fans and have a name to attribute success to. He was obviously the best choice for a leader in their locker room.

I sure hope not.

Vegas went without for the first year...better way to go IMO

Also, marketing plans can be updated with a mouse click. Seattle will have a new hook next season.

How is that better? Maybe Vegas had no one who was captain material and Seattle did.

Big picture / retrospect I agree it's a little odd, but if you're imagining fall training camp for that rag-tag team, Gio would have easily emerged as the natural leader and captain of the team. Would have almost been awkward to NOT name him captain, citing "we plan on trading away the natural leader in this locker room at the end of the season anyways"

Amen.

Losing Gio in expansion created a lot of room for the Flames to get better on D.

What are you saying? Kylington is exactly the player they need or do not need?

You pretty much said both!

In five years kylington will be 28. Is he too old at that age? What can he do now? Play top pairing minutes for your team.

You have a top pairing dman at 23 years old. He has atleast 12 years of hockey ahead of him.

Seattle has a window? In five years time Kylington would be a perfect place for him to play. That window would be open for atleast 7 more years.

I value Kylington more than you do. Agree to disagree.

I doubt anyone knew what Kylington would potentially become, since he went through waivers.

And I doubt he'd have blossomed on Seattle like he did in Calgary.

Seattle selected Gio with the intention of flipping him at the trade deadline. Which they did.

Did the corpses of Marleau and Thornton overlap in TO?

Amonte and Roenick in PHI...they narrowly missed each other in ARI the year before.

Recchi was traded for both Tocchet and LeClair at different times...all three ended up as teammates in PHI from 2000-2002. Recchi and LeClair were actually Flyers together for 6 seasons, and both signed with PIT coming out of the lockout.

I think some LAK/BOS guys - Donato, Stumpel, G Murray, etc. might have reunited, or they might have been traded together.

Similarly, some of the 90s STL crew may have overlapped elsewhere? Tkachuk/Arnott/Weight with a pinch of Mellanby/Guerin/Rolston/Scott Young/Demitra/Langenbrunner/Holik/etc.

Lots of guys seem to have played several years for each of STL/DAL/NJD...with some other overlap earlier in EDM or later in ATL, or maybe multiple different stints in STL. A big spiderweb of connections, though I'm not sure how many would have been considered established connections.

Joe and Gary might be unique in reuniting 3 times with both TO and FLA (though they moved together the last time).

I don't expect that the Seattle team is now falling apart with wide eyed rookies shocked becuase their captain was traded. However, Seattle didn't have to name a capitan, the Flames haven't, so for them to do that IMO still means they think he was going to be the foundation they build up, for more than 1 year.
There is some caché/legitimacy to having a borderline HOFer as your first captain. Now that he's going to be a Leaf it probably punches his ticket to the HOF.

It is unclear whether SEA had anything resembling a coherent plan. I think they were hoping for a VGK-like start in the weak PAC division - their goalies and UFA signings indicate a bit of a win-now approach - but with another eye to Plan B or selling guys.

Worked out a little better in Vegas lol

Not sure what makes Gio a great leader anyway...the teams he led never won anything and were incredibly inconsistent.

Can someone explain how the Leafs fit this into their cap without shedding salary in the deal?

Capfriendly.com hasn't added Gio to the Leafs lineup yet, but they only have $4.3M in deadline cap space.

I always thought they didn't have the cap space to upgrade their defense and goaltending because they overpaid their top forwards.

Salary retention, maybe someone going the other way?
