Werenski might be the closest comparable and he's paid almost exactly the same money, for less term.

IMO, Heiskanen and Makar are at the top. The former is consistently underrated.

Miro Heiskanen was outstanding in the playoffs, but had some regression during the previous regular season.
Still a great defenceman though. Might have one of the highest ceilings in the league.

Yeah, after looking through the comparable, his salary isn’t egregious. Heiskanen is really well priced, in comparison though. As is Josi, though his contract probably got helped because of the years in his mid to late 30s
Bruins are in an interesting spot though. Bergeron might be a year or two away from hanging them up. Marchand is on the wrong side of 30. Krejci left.
Pastrnak is still young though and obviously part of their nucleus going forward. As is McAvoy

McAvoy is a great defenseman, only $250k more than Nurse, Nurse can't carry McAvoy's hockey bag. Not a huge bargain, but I think this is a decent signing for Boston.

Some players get paid because they put up huge offensive seasons - Karlsson and Burns spring to mind in the past.
Some players get paid because they do everything you could possibly hope for in a player - both ends of the rink. Giordano, Doughty and Hedman spring to mind.
Some players get paid because...I have no idea. Nurse springs to mind here.
McAvoy is definitely in the 2nd group - he is one of the best 2-way defencemen in the league today. This contract may not have been a 'bargain', but I don't think it is an over-payment either. This is what an elite 2-way defencemen costs today.

McAvoy is a great player, this contract is just fine.

He's likely in the top 5 already.
This is a spectacular deal, getting all of his prime years.

It's almost as if you haven't watched hockey in five years. Letang and the corpse of Shea Weber? Theodore? Yikes.

Theodore is pretty damned good but he's not McAvoy.
Look, the only real comparables are Werenski and Nurse*, because they're the same RFA class on their third contracts and they signed this offseason. McAvoy is better than both and a LOT better than Nurse. This is a perfectly reasonable contract given the market. The market seems a bit ####ed up, but that's partly because defensemen have previously been undervalued.
*You could argue Jones too but since he pretty much sucks now, and does not deserve his deal at all, I'm not going to bother.

Why pay for one Charlie McAvoy when you can get three Codi Ceci’s?

Right. Because it doesn’t matter if the season is 52 or 82 games when comparing point totals. Got it.
