Ryan's best asset is that he makes other players better. Hathaway, Mangiapane, Lucic, Dube... heck, even Ritchie potted a couple of goals thanks to Ryan.

I guess we'll test that theory in Edmonton; they'll need his defensive presence more than anything.

Lewis has had 12, 12 and 10 points the last 3 years. His career high in points is 26.

Derek Ryan had more points than 26 in the last 4 years prior to last (29, 38, 38, 29).

Ryan has had 38, 29 and 13 in the last 3 years. His worst year (43 games) was still better than Lewis' best.

Not knocking Lewis but just saying Ryan is not over rated. You spin numbers based on who signs the player. If Ryan would have re-signed for 1.25 M in Calgary you would have probably said good signing.

Treliving says they had discussions to keep Ryan in Calgary.

Edmonton is no good

Pretty obvious to me they didn't address their biggest weakness. Smith doesn't have ANOTHER career year at 40 and they take a major step back.

Very different roles and teams

Cup winning coach wants Lewis more who are we to argue...Ryan is pretty small for the bottom six IMO. Flames bottom six is gonna pound the #### out of teams

They're pretty bad, and you won't compete with them as your tandem.

Smith's very best his old man body could muster wasn't enough to bag a round. Nay, a win.

The point? I dunno. Its just fun to point out.

If you remove Klefbom that leaves 7 d

They have 5.5 to sign 2 players. What will they get though? Foegele is 25. Sign him for 2 years and it could be for $3 mil or less. Yaomoto has similar career numbers as mangiapane. It’s going to be tight. I could still see a koskinen buy out.

2 years is the tough part. He will be 36 next year. His numbers slipped each of his 3 years in Calgary and he’s another year older.

Reliable 4th liner and an ok signing but 2 years is tough

It was mentioned that they had talks to keep Ryan and he wanted to move on so I wouldn't say that.

Too bad, but Ryan probably has a better shot of playing up in the lineup in Edmonton as 3C than in Calgary.

Couldn't disagree more. His first two seasons he contributed in every way possible including the score sheet and he's a career plus. Last season just 2 goals. He'll help them on the PK and as a 4th line center defensively but he declined in the last year of that deal.

Probably didn't like the way he was utilized.

Knows the Oilers will play him higher and more since he will have no competition there.

Flames probably offered one year.

Flames have some young guys who should get some playing time on the 4th line in Gawdin, maybe Ruzicka (not really suited for the role but he's got size), Pospisil. You aren't going to take Ryan at $1.25 million out and sit him. It's easier to sit Lewis for these guys.

The same people complaining about the Flames not giving young players a chance are complaining about the Flames not committing term to a bottom six veteran.

Lewis' contract is perfect if you want to integrate young players into the lineup.

I really liked Ryan and thought he performed very well for the team for his entire contract, even though that contract was a little high for the 4th line C slot. Reliable, drove some offence from the bottom-six, and worked well with his line mates. I also liked that he was someone who could play up the lineup over short stretches without looking out of place. I was kind of hoping there would be spot for him still on a lower AAV contract.

But, clearly the Flames are trying to get a bit more physical and difficult to play against in the bottom-six, and I'm ok with that. The team needed to make some changes so not re-signing Ryan makes sense.

I think the Oilers are getting a quality piece on a very friendly cap hit and term with this signing. Too bad!

Have to wonder if being put on waivers a ton of times last year pissed him off.

Yeah, crazy enough it seems the strategy of under utilizing players, devaluing them, and trying to sign them to team friendly deals doesn’t seem to be embraced by the players here
