Then it's a good thing it's not July the 1st anymore!

If the Flames sign Hyman for 7*6M, that would be terrible. Please, please, please be the Oilers.

He gave non-NHL players/human anchors James Neal (5.75M) and Troy Brouwer (4.5M) significant money and term. Hyman is at least a good player, so it doesn't seem out of character that he'd be backing up the truck to overpay.
It's just what he does in free agency.

Thank goodness for Holland and Benning.

Canucks have a protection spot available too up front, could see them acquiring his rights from the Leafs before the expansion draft and signing him.
Hopefully they pay a 2nd rounder and/or good prospect for the rights.

This is a player that would help the team, fit into the system, fill a pressing need for a right shot, and provide character and grit. However, these are also the circumstances where players of his caliber cash in on career seasons and never play up to their huge contracts.
I'm hoping that Treliving is actually just driving up the price for rivals. He's been burned on these deals before... you'd think with Gaudreau and Tkachuk's deals coming up he would be desperate to avoid a long term big ticket deal to a middle 6 player.

Taking a while to get to 5000

Not sure how the Canucks or Oilers can afford him but I suppose buyouts could be coming from Edmonton. As it stands, enjoy Calgary, Zach!

I suppose if Gio is taken by the Kraken it's possible and Darryl would love him but I feel the bidding on this one may get out of control and most GM's will fold.

Someone please hide Treliving's cellphone and disconnect every fax machine within 1000 miles of Calgary. I can smell a high value low return coming a mile away.

Hyman is nothing special in my opinion. His points per game have been strong the past couple years but we are still talking about a guy who is 29 and has scored 21 goals and 41pts as a career high. At least Neal came with a decade of 20 goal years and back to back trips to the finals and Brouwer came after an impressive playoff run and also came with a cup ring.
To me Hyman is a product of the Toronto media and is a nice player who should be looking at the Toffoli deal and not a max term deal at $7M.
I honestly feel like this is Treliving screwing with Holland after the Oilers tossed the big 7 year deal at Marky last offseason.
End of the day I think Hyman does better playing with McDavid than he does with Monahan but regardless it will be an overpay in the first year or two and will be a future buyout

Hyman is a play driver...or at least looks to be. Could he be the piece that turns Gaudreau - Monahan - ? into a competent even strength line? Then we roll Tkachuk - Lindholm - Mangiapane and that's the top-6?
I like Hyman. But 6 or 7 years is absolute madness. On a 5 year deal, years 4 and 5 likely look rather bad...6 or 7? Eeep.

Don't want x20000
You need to stay away from players like Hyman.
If ever he lands here it's going to be Brouwer 2.0

Yeah Hyman would make the team better.
Sniffing around the player is fine as long as you don't win the damn bid against idiots.
I'm always a little dubious of a writer that just names every Western Canadian team in a sentence of who's looking at a player though. Seems fishy.

I just want to steer clear. I want Landeskog or Hall but do not want to pay the rumored ask for Hyman. He plays with high skill players and still doesn’t put up a ton of points.
If Hyman wants and gets 6x7 then those talks earlier in the summer of 6x6 for Mangiapane actually looks accurate.
We talk about the Flames getting elite players and spending the rumored ask for Hyman is exactly the type of move they need to avoid. I really hope the Flames are in here to drive up the price for the Oil.
I am starting to circle back on Hall being the guy especially if the rest of the top forwards remain. I think Hall can be an excellent winger for Monahan and it allows Johnny to continue to be on the loaded top line with Lindholm and Tkachuk

Agreed. Is there a UFA or trade target that Treliving isn't sniffing around?

I'd worry more about the fact that BT is TRYING to sign him if that's true. Means he's not learning from past mistakes.

The risk of signing veteran UFA’s is most definitely a lesson yet to be learned by this GM.

It is a well known marketing strategy in hockey articles to tag a few Canadian teams in every rumour.

Isn't Hall pretty much re-signed with Boston? Don't think he comes here.
