yes, it is the same AAV, but it gives the player money faster and gives more of a guarantee the player gets the money
It is an advantage the big market teams, they can afford to pay the players in these massive lump sum payments.
For smaller teams it would be a struggle, to pay them out without the money coming in through the season.

...with each SB payment, CRA takes almost half of it away at once. That's a lot of money. These rich hockey players pay a lot of taxes. Then escrow payments, agent fees etc. etc. etc. I heard they receive less then 25% of the gross pay home.

It used to be one of the great advantages of youth is that it helped your salary structure. But what we are increasingly seeing is that guys are cashing once they come off their elc's. As a team, you get 3 years of lower salary for a young player and then that advantage disappears almost overnight.
Eventually this is going to catch up to all teams, and being a veteran UFA will be not nearly so lucrative as it once was. Guys like Neal may have got in under the wire as far as signing big money retirement contracts with term.

But McDavid/Drai combined are better than Matthews/JT
McDavid is the best of the bunch by quite a bit despite my hate of the Oilers

Yes, the 30 year-old guys will be going cup-in-hand, begging for 2 year deals or PTOs. The amount of money available is still the same - it just looks like it will get paid during the 21-27 years now.

That would be complete hyperbole.
They pay a lot but is all % based so no one is paying more than the next guy unless he is making more.

I'm just going put this out there:
I think that the players and their agents are being shortsighted by trying to grab every penny from the team they can. Look at Crosby's contract - that's a team friendly contract that has helped make the Penguins a very competitive cap era team.
Not all players can take advantage of this, but players like Crosby, McDavid, and Matthews should consider taking less money to help make their teams more competitive and help them win Stanley Cups - I just think that Crosby is making more on sponsorships (McDonald's, Tim Horton's, etc.) because of his championships and smart contract - I think in the long run - Crosby is gong to make more money - greed doesn't always pay off.

I think it is preferable, but I don't think anyone is leaving money on the table to get paid in bonuses.

He is better than Matthews I will agree...but not by a lot IMO.
Matthews is an extremely good hockey player but his issue looks like it may come down to staying healthy.
