They could have taken Marner or Hanifin. Everyone knew Strome's issue was skating and you had two of the best skaters on the board who also had production too. It's weird cause next year, they went with Keller who is pretty similar to Marner. Also in 2016, you had a prospect like Tkachuk who was similar to Strome with skating as the big question mark. It really is hard to tell with these things.
Maybe the game has changed too much in the past 3 years and the skating issues are bigger now. It was only 2 years ago that the big lumber Oilers and Ducks were battling it out in the second round and talked about as Stanley Cup contenders and now both are slow lumbering teams. But again, Tkachuk is still not a great skater, so I guess it comes down to the "special".

Could go either way, but it looks to me like a bit of a panic/reaction trade from the Yotes.
5 short-handed goals against in 2 games. Yikes.

I agree with this. Not enough stock gets put into who a player plays with. Chicago has struggled with depth for a few years so opportunity has been given to players. This could be another namestnikov trade. NYR thought they were getting a young 60 point guy. Namestnikov got all his points on a line with stamkos and kucherov and since being traded to the rangers has 13 points in 42 games.

Maybe a change of scenery will do him good but he looks a lot like his brother and that’s not good.

Both Stromes look like total busts. Schmaltz and Perlini can at least skate really well, which is more than you can ever say about Ryan or Dylan Strome.
And neither Strome does anything remotely decent to even come close to compensate for the fact that they skate like molasses. The one saving grace for Dylan Strome is that Kane and/or Toews can make him look halfway decent.
Schmaltz is the best player out of this deal now (not to say this will help the Yotes much because it likely won't), but Perlini has a good chance of becoming the best player out of this when all is said and done.

I doubt it. He can't skate, and with how much of a problem that is for him, it will likely always be a major detriment for the rest of his career. And I'm not sold on the rest of his game becoming much better either on its own merit.
Playing with Kane or Toews will help him look better but those two are also showing severe signs of wear and tear.

They didn’t have to pick Strome. The consensus pick at that slot was probably Hanifin. And of course Mariner, Provorov, Werenski and Rantanen still available. Strome’s skating issues were well documented and the NHL had been getting faster. The safest pick there was Hanifin for sure.

Strome was the 3rd ranked 2015 skater by a few scouting services as was Hanafin. The Coyotes already had OEL and needed a franchise center so really nobody was surprised when he was picked. It's just bad luck for them they dropped in the lottery and missed out on Eichel and McDavid. Interesting that both Strome and Hanafin have now been traded.

Nope Hanifin was 3rd according to Central Scouting, Redline, Future Considerations and Bob Mackenzie that year. He was the consensus #3 pick.

Having multiple top pairing defencemen is a good thing not a bad thing. They could easily have take Hanifin while they had OEL.

I think both have been pretty good this year.
Kane in particular is on pace for 96 points this year, including 71 ES points.
Toews on pace for 68 points, which would be his highest total in 5 years (he has only once gotten more than 69 points in his career).
We should all suffer such wear and tear.

Sure, but I don't see Strome even adding the same value to Kane or Toews that Schmaltz did, even if Schmaltz was totally propped up by them.
I think Perlini will eventually end up becoming the best player of the 3 in this trade.

Strome has been wasting away on the 4th line with below average line mates.
It would be interesting to see what he can do with some decent line mates before he's ridden out of the league.
Hard to imagine a 3rd overall pick is completely lacking in skills LOL.

Thing is, no forwards on that Arizona Coyotes team are any good except for Keller for sure and maybe Galchenyuk, so it's not like who Strome played with on that team other than Keller would've made any notable difference.

With any trade that the 'Hawks make, contract status is a huge factor. Schmaltz will need to be re-signed at the end of this season, guessing 4 to 6 million per, will be the range, but,on potential, alone. Strome is signed through next season. Perlini, will need a contract, I am guessing $950k to $2M per.
Schmaltz as a #2C, is hopeless at the dot. A good back checker, but, is soft on board play. He defers to Kane or Toews too much, passing up prime shooting chances. And had been moved to LW, where he looked very uncomfortable.
With Perlini as a mid-6 guy, and Strome with better face off numbers as a potential #2C, along with the cost control for the extra year, I like the deal.

I really like Schmaltz. Not sure I can pick a winner.

Edmonton has two franchise players or generational talents. This far exceeds the 1st line discussion or even top 6.

The difference would be getting 20 minutes a night ice time vs. 12 minutes.
