Is this yet another example of the oldest profession paving the way for new technologies (thinking VHS, DVD's, streaming)? I won't be able to buy an anthropomorphic robot butler in 10 years without this crucial step in development?
One more question - is Japan leading the way on this technology?

I think the odds they do it properly are quite high. There are some serious problems they could run into if they don’t.
I think the odds are quite low. but I guess it's how you define cleaning properly. since the owners are telling people to wear a condom to be safe, I really doubt they are doing a proper sterilization.
they'd have to run the entire doll through say a dry heat or stream sterilizer for about 20-30 minutes at around 120C
I bet they are only disinfecting and not sterilizing the dolls.

If you consider all the cleaning costs, $80 per "use" seems like they will be losing money. I mean, they must be providing clean sheets on the bed, clean clothes for the doll, somehow cleaning the doll, including hair(I hope...ewww), plus all the other usual business costs...Can't be much profit there if they are doing what they should be doing.

the nurse at my work would love to know their cleaning process. She's horrified if it's just hosing out the holes and a cleaning with caviwipes (infection control wipes) She wouldn't recommend going there unless they run the dolls through a cycle in a proper sterilizing unit. and we all know they won't be doing that.
