NHL going to increase cap enough next offseason to allow leafs to sign marner, matthews, etc.
I think theres a 50% chance of this happening, and in that situation the Flames wouldn't really need to worry about Brouwer's cap hit.
Buy him out

So, the NHL is in cahoots with the Leafs because they love them so much that the Leafs haven't won a cup for who knows how long? Makes sense.

It’s still a game of skill in the end of the day. Similar to Edmonton, despite having multiple advantages, outcomes don’t always follow when you are that dysfunctional

I just love how there's tons of conspiracy theories both for and against Canadian teams amongst fans. "Stupid Bettmen hates Canada and will make sure no one ever wins here" "Stupid Bettman is rigging things for Edmonton/Toronto!".

Some of the same fans believe both.

The cap is based on league revenues, not the whim of the league.

If I understand the timelines correctly, the 48 hour buyout window opens tomorrow. In order to take advantage of it, the Flames would have to put the player they'd be looking to buy out on waivers either today or tomorrow. Since no one was waived today, we should know by 10:00am tomorrow if there's any chance of a buyout occurring.

The only reason I can think of that Hanifin isnt signed yet is they are waiting to buy someone out. Otherwise sign him to his bridge and be done with it.
I guess not the "only" but it would make sense

By similar logic, perhaps the fact that nobody has been waived yet indicates that nobody is being bought out.
Really, it's just speculation for the sake of speculation in the summer. We find out in hours.

Ya but if they signed him to higher contract say a week ago then everybody would know Brouwer was a dead man walking, even him. When they could just wait and pull the bandaid off in one swipe.
But obviously just speculation.

It also makes good sense that both sides are still negotiating. Not every deal can be hammered out in a matter of hours or days.
