Just an aside, how many guys that sit games eating popcorn ACTUALLY eat popcorn while watching the games?

Pretty positive Rhett Warrener did whenever he had to sit. The man loves his popcorn.

But in all seriousness with the cap crunch how can we have a 4th line player that doesn't have very good speed, makes 4.5 million and likely won't factor in on special teams anymore be on the team?

At least the other bubble guys in Lazar, Hathaway, Dube, Foo, Mangiapane, Kulak, Prout, Andersson, Valimaki, Kylington, Rittich and Gillies are cheap and/or on 2-way deals.

Brouwer is the biggest pain in the ass contract we have and needs to go - not that we all don't know this already.

It does when I do it.

Nothing but admiration and respect for you AC but brouwer is a useless player and deserves all the flack

I meant more because it makes reading CP pretty tough when it pops up in every thread.

I also disagree that Brouwer is a wholly useless player. Tanner Glass is a useless player. If Brouwer made $650k, he wouldn't be criticized -- he would be lauded.

However, he's crazy overpaid and super duper redundant so I agree that he should be moved.

Yeah, you’re correct, he’s still an NHL caliber player. But you can’t ignore his contract in a cap world. $4.5m AAV for what he brings is simply unacceptable.

If we buy him out I’m sure he’d land somewhere, but he wouldn’t be making nearly what he’s making now.

That's true.

I think it would be much wiser for the Flames to try and trade him, while retaining salary and maybe taking back another less bad contract. It would lessen the dead cap space a buyout makes, but would still create some flexibility.

He is an NHL player, just terribly overpaid.

If brouwer actually hit people, played with tenacity, defended team mates and used his size to make the game harder for other teams, he might be a useful player. Him floating around trying to play a "skill" game or whatever it is hes done the last two seasons then I think he is still useless as someone like versteeg could play the same amount and bring more scoring.

Let's try to criticize fairly. He was fourth or fifth in hits, he defended teammates until his face got broken (he fought at least three times when teammates got hit). I don't think he floated. I think he was behind the play because of speed.

After watching the guy as a flame for 2 years, i realize that he's definitely not worth $4.5M/yr. Then i tried to determine what price point would make his contribution level fair.....

I wouldn't want Brouwer on a league minimum contract. I don't care if they buy him out this year or next, but i would much rather be seeing the likes of mangiapane, foo, czarnik, klimchuk, lazar, Hathaway in his bottom line winger spot.

Because of her service time, I don't believe that Brouwer has to accept a demotion to the AHL.

But one this is obvious, he wouldn't refuse if it voided his contract.

Gets traded (50% salary retained) with Lazar for a 2nd?

Or maybe a trade (50% retained) with Stone for a 1st or an equivalent prospect?

Or how about a trade (50% retained) with Rittich for a reliable backup?

Not saying any of these could happen, but if one did, I would consider it successful...

Yeah unfortunately that would be the Flames adding the whatever round pick, and retaining salary.

I get that but there has got to be some scenario where a team with cap space would take on his undeniable leadership skills for a draft pick, no?

Or just wishful thinking...
