How many disappointing seasons from Bennett until Flames try to move on?
What do you think you get now compared to what you get if he doesn't progress in the next season? What about two seasons?
I just don't see it from him. I hope I am wrong.

Bennett just turned 22.
Mikael Backlund finally "got it" at what? 26? I'd hate to give up on Bennett so early, especially when his value is low.

You're right. They should just terminate his contract and release him from the team for nothing, because he hasn't met the expectations they had when they drafted him.

THIS. ALL OF THIS.
So many just want to keep holding onto some notion that a miracle progression is coming year after year after year.
He is what he is. A first round bust.
I get he was our highest ever pick and theres some romance dreaming of him finally putting it all together but it isnt coming folks.
Get what u can for the guy and cut bait.

If he's as bad as you say, you won't get anything for him at all.

Or... you could just keep him because, even if he doesn’t live up to his draft position, he still brings good qualities to the table.
People are acting like Bennett doesn’t even belong in the NHL, they’re letting their disappointment that he’s not a #1C cloud the fact that he’s a young player who, at very least, has a future as a quality bottom six guy. Disappointing? Sure. “MUST TRADE HIM FOR SOME REASON”? No.
It’s funny that the people who are most disappointed are the ones who think he’s worth trading. Like, for what? If he’s worthless to keep, how are we getting anything for him?

I in no way think he'd get us a first round pick. I laughed at the rumor that it was a possibility.

I get what you're saying AC and like I said I hope people are right about Bennett (I would gladly eat crow), but unlike Backlund, Bennett hasn't been a responsible player while developing. Instead he has been bagged on this forum, and rightfully so, for his tremendously stupid penalties.
Frankly if he gets you a top 10 pick like some here were suggesting, it's a no brainer. I think he eventually leaves for a 2nd rounder.
Again, I really hope I am wrong.

Look, either he's a total bust and worth nothing, or he's worth something and it's worth at least entertaining the possibility of keeping him on the team for what he is now. You can't have it both ways.

He isnt a defensive forward so isnt suited for the bottom 6. He isnt putting up points to warrant a top 6 position.
Takes bad penalties.
Also, and this is strictly my opinion, his body language on many nights looks exactly like he gives zero Fs when losses happens.

Was Backlund a responsible player at Bennett's age?
Bennett just played in his 21 year old season, Backlund was 20 when Playfair famously screamed in his face about how lazy and entitled he was.

So, if that’s true, how are we getting anything for him?

Hes young, thats worth something to teams.
Many also love those reclamation or finding that potential projects.
That should garner a 2nd or 3rd rounder.

I don't think we really know what Bennett is yet and we certainly don't know that Wahlstrom will even be an NHLer in the next couple of years let alone at all.

well you don't have to, as the deal wasn't made or even considered by either side...
while its possible that Bennett has a ton of potential left, the likelihood of him every tapping into it diminishes every year that passes.... at this point people are hoping that putting him on a line with great players will make him into a great player....so he's already being looked at as a complimentary player, not a star in his own right, if he gets put on the top line and doesn't produce, his value drops even further
the corollary to over valuing shiny new toys is over valuing the toys you own and thinking they are more than they are worth.
i would have traded Bennett a pick not lower than 15... next year, if he doesn't breakout, Calgary would be lucky to get a late 1st.

“Bennett isn’t good enough offensively to be top 6, isn’t good enough defensively to be bottom 6, takes bad penalties, and doesn’t care about winning.”
“I think that’s worth a 2nd.”
Basically Bennett madness in a nutshell.
“He’s terrible! Let’s trade him for something good.”
