The Marlies powerplay has been pretty average this year.

A lot of reaching for straws here. We can't, not should we, be able to nail down the subtleties of the new head coach, so throwing out assistant names after knowing even less about them given their work more in the shadows, seems pretty futile.
Example, how many times time we hear Jerrard speak in his two years? Cameron pretty quiet too, he got the post game radio assignment any time I heard.
And bringing in a former player based on their specialty as a player is far too simple an analysis.
Peters will bring in at least one guy he's very familiar with and trust.GG that was Gerrard. Sutter that was Preston. Peters it well could be Steve Smith for his second go as a Flames assistant.
The second one is a toss up. Again someone who he knows and has specific experiences in the area Peters wants help with.

Don't worry I was with you. I thought it was typos and autocorrect and he was saying he'd "beat the heck out of MJ"
Now I get it

Lol, sorry.
Another thing about Hunter then I’ll quit. He does not preach a very physical game he never used a tough guy to send a message. Swift pounded our guys and aside from a strong grinding forecheck that was about it for our toughness.
Anyone thinking bringing in Hunter will bring that edge back to Calgary Would end up very disappointed.

Oddly this thread went quiet after the head coach hiring. So far not much summary of who may be available /desirable.
I see the following listed:
Offense/PP
Paul Maclean
Sheldon Keefe
Adam Oates
Lindy Ruff
Defense/PK
Trent Yawney
Nate Leeman
Ryan Huska
Montgomery?
Todd Nelson
David Quinn
Tim Hunter

I’d like Scott Stevens or Pronger to come in and work with Hamilton.

Stevens looks to have quit coaching. I wonder what he'd say - "don't hit like this - it isn't allowed any more"?
Pronger is strictly a front office guy.

Add Joe Mullen to the list for PP/Offense. He ran a great powerplay in his time in Philadelphia.
Interstingly enough it was Peters/Blashill that replaced Maclean/Brad McCrimmon (RIP) on Babcock's coaching staff in Detroit. So Peters and Maclean are probably very familiar with each other since they are both Babcock guys.
Then Yawney and MacLean were together on the ducks coaching staff for the 15/16 and 16/17 seasons.
Peters - MacLean - Yawney would be a really formidable coaching staff IMO.

Whoever the assistant coaches are, it'll be someone that Treliving knows and they'll be someone who grew up in this province - besides Gelina.

Please no more former Ottawa head coaches, I don't think my jimmie's could take another rustling this year.

Just going to re-post my previous take on assistants:

PK / Defense
Brian Campbell
I believe our defensemen need guidance and backing on staff from someone who's actually been a great defenseman in the NHL. Peters has the PK system in place and the coach just has to implement it. You look at Pittsburgh and they have Gonchar on staff. Anaheim has Neidermayer on staff. Up until last year, Nashville had Phil Housley on staff, who got himself promoted to Buffalo's head coach. A stubborn head coach is more likely to listen to feedback from someone who's actually been a star in the league and Campbell was a hell of a defenseman in his day. I mean hell he'd still be an upgrade on at least Stone as a player today.
|
As for Huska I have seen enough to know he is mediocrity defined.

I’ve seen Scott Stevens a number of times as a defensive analyst on hockey games. He was demonstrating how to box out and attack forwards and showing how to do it without drawing penalties in today’s NHL. He was also good at showing how to use the stick in different situations and ways to prevent the shooter getting off a good shot. He also had funny stories starting “in my day....”. He’d be a great assistant coach if available.

The Grand Rapids coach won a Calder Cup last year with the Griffins. His team made the playoffs again this season and now, according to NHL sources, multiple NHL teams have reached out to him about the possibility of taking an assistant coaching job with their clubs. It’s believed the Dallas Stars and at least one other Western Conference team have expressed interest.

dunno if that other team would be us or Edmonton or someone else, but it would be nice if it were us and we're not going after another Cameron Clown Show

Besides Calgary, Dallas, and Edmonton, have any other Western teams lost/fired their assistants this offseason?
With the way things went with him in Edmonton the first time, I'd be surprised if he'd want to go back there (I guess they still might have asked him if he was interested).
It would be funny if Gulutzan ended up an assistant in Edmonton and Nelson an assistant in Calgary.

To be fair I have heard from someone I know that is very close to the situation and they told me Gulutzen signed a 3 year deal to be an assistant coach in Edmonton. It will be announced after the memorial cup.

Here is an article from the enemy about Emanuel Viveiros. It sounds like it would be a positive hire.
