Why would we not bring Mangiapane up now if Versteeg is out long term? The only player on the 4th line who you could realistically see pulling out of the offensive nothingness was Versteeg. Stajan, Hamilton and Lazar could all be waived tomorrow and you replace them with better farmhands. They won't do that to Stajan, so I'll settle for a swap of Lazar/Hamilton for Mangiapane/Hrivik.

The team isn't getting scoring from the bottom 6 with any consistency. So bring up the young, hungry kids with some finish in their game. Don't go trade an asset for some scrub, or claim Blake Comeau off waivers. Do the right thing.

Why? Nothing changes with roster space. Versteeg was already on the IR and Hathaway was recalled as his replacement.

We still have the eminently waivable Hamilton and Lazar up here being nice human beings.

Right now, the 4th line and below consists of Lazar, Hamilton, Stajan, Hathaway and Brouwer, with their combined 0 goals. Who thinks that's remotely okay?

Fan960 panel suspects one of Klimchuck or Hrivik may get called up, as they are more NHL-ready than Mangiapane. Also, as of today, Freddie Hamilton has to clear waivers again in order to be sent down.

Hamilton and Lazar have been out of the line-up lately. Hathaway has earned one of the 4th line spots. Mangiapane doesn't play center, meaning they would need to take Brouwer out of the line-up to fit him in. Not going to happen.

Opening night bottom 6:

Versteeg - Bennett - Lazar
Glass - Stajan - Brouwer

Current Bottom 6:

Bennett - Jankowski - Jagr
Hathaway - Stajan - Brouwer

Slowly but surely this is starting to work itself out...

P.S. Sucks for Steeger, but the silver lining with injuries is that someone else gets a chance...

I agree wholeheartedly.

I want to give Stajan some recognition here because a lot of (usual suspects) love to pile on Stajan.

Check natural stat trick and he is absolutely buried in the defensive zone 5 on 5. He wins a lot of faceoffs and he plays well defensively on the 4th line. Shots for/against at 5 on 5 he is only -2 shots. PDO is really low. He is due for a couple bounces maybe on offence.

His job is to keep the damage to a minimum 5 on 5 and I think he does his job.

@Kristen_Odland
Just spoke with Brad Treliving regarding Flames forward Kris Versteeg's hip surgery (now month-to-month). Doesn't believe this is the end of his career. "He's not an old man. He's got a lot of hockey left in him." Says they'll know more Monday of the exact rehab timeline.

@Kristen_Odland
Treliving: “I don’t think it’s the end of his career ... Kris isn’t an old man. I think he’s still got a lot of hockey left. I don’t like putting time frames on it — who knows what’s going to happen this year? We’re hopeful. But let’s just take one step at a time.”
