A problem that is magnified when the officials are going out of their way to screw him on legitimate calls also.

Just because he is a Flame and our star player does not absolve him of what he sometimes does (ie. dive). He needs to stop the whining and stop the diving. The last thing I want is our team having a reputation for being a bunch of Canuck-like divers. I love him as a player. But this is the worst thing about him lMO

The problem I have isn't the fine against him. It's not doing the same for guys like McDiver who have embellished so obvious it's hilarious yet get away with it.

Whatever. The NHL can fine away and Johnny can keep diving as far as I'm concerned. Like it or not it's part of the game, and like cheating at faceoffs for example, players get better at it over time. Hope Johnny hones his craft. I certainly don't recall it hurting the team much thus far.
On the topic, I am glad to see the Flames getting a reputation for chippy play and rough stuff and generally being dicks to play against. Good. It's about time, and it's an identity that I'm tired of seeing only in the teams they play against.
The Flames have enough skill and structure to back it up, too. Reminds me of the Ducks teams that have haunted us for so many seasons.

Agreed... the application of the fine is laughable.
Gaudreau is the only NHL fined for embellishment in the 2016-2017 season?!
good job NHL

The frustration comes from the fact that the refs seem to single him out in a very unfair and unbalanced way.
If he were a rare diver/whiner I could understand the message the refs were trying to send. But what we have is an epidemic problem, but only one guy who is being singled out by the refs.
THAT'S the problem people have.
|
So everyone wants the other guilty offenders to face the same punishment? I get that. I want the same. And it blows that Gaudreau is being singled out, when there are countless other examples around the league. But Gaudreau has zero control over what the rest of the divers do. All he can do is control what he himself does.
If he wants to get on the refs' good side, he has to cut out the whining and diving. Sadly, he clearly has a reputation among the officials and he won't get the benefit of a doubt for a while now.
For all we know in the ref's locker room during the warm up, they have him circled and the mentality is ''don't let him pull one over on us boys''. It's probably unfair and not right no one else has been fined. But all Johnny can do in control what he himself does. It should come as no surprise to anyone, that with the worst officiating in pro sports, that something like this happens.

Johnny thought could pull a fast one on the rookie. Johnny bad.
Complaining to the Refs is fine. He's a target.

Sucks to see a Flame called out and fined for diving however with the NHL reffing you need to embellish a bit to get the calls. The best players strike a balance between a bit of embellishment and not being obvious divers.

Kind of like the game where a penalty shot was awarded to McDavid while Johnny didn't get one.
On the bright side, collectively the Flames are going to channel that unfairness and take it out on the oilers should we meet them in the playoffs.

When McDavid inevitably faces the same fine, will it be a story on the front page of NHL.com?

How are people relating Gaudreau being slashed to him diving? Makes zero sense and I don't see the correlation between the two.

I agree, but to be fair diving isn't specific to one team. Every team does it to a certain extent. But it does suck to see him get called out publicly.

He gets slashes = nothing gets called = Johnny feels he has to embellish to try and get ANY calls.

So, the rules are if you dive you get fined. Fine, no problems with that. Honestly think that this is being blown out of proportion.
However, does the league have fines for excessive stick work?
