McDavid, Ekblad, Matthews, Laine, McKinnon, Crosby, Ovechkin, Malkin, Doughty, Stamkos, Tavares, Kane, Toews ... guys who there was never a doubt that they would be in the NHL as soon as legally possible. Players would barring severe injuries would be flirting with the league max in their first UFA year.
The trouble is that the Kevin Lowe school of GM sets the standard for generational players way too low. Somehow good players got classified as great players by panicked GMs.
The Oilers had 3 or 4 . The Flames have 3!!!

The only reason Trouba signed this deal is because the Jets wouldn't give him the type of deal he wanted, and that other young and similar defensemen have gotten.
He caved, in order to make getting traded more likely and palatable.
This deal has no bearing on recent long-term deals because Trouba isn't going to be a Jet long term.
