Not entirely sure about the full answer to your question, but I bet Hamilton will have something to do with it.

There should be 1-2 generational players coming off their ELCs every year.

Trouba is not one.

McDavid, Ekblad, Matthews, Laine, McKinnon, Crosby, Ovechkin, Malkin, Doughty, Stamkos, Tavares, Kane, Toews ... guys who there was never a doubt that they would be in the NHL as soon as legally possible. Players would barring severe injuries would be flirting with the league max in their first UFA year.

The trouble is that the Kevin Lowe school of GM sets the standard for generational players way too low. Somehow good players got classified as great players by panicked GMs.

The Oilers had 3 or 4 . The Flames have 3!!!
The only reason Trouba signed this deal is because the Jets wouldn't give him the type of deal he wanted, and that other young and similar defensemen have gotten.

He caved, in order to make getting traded more likely and palatable.

This deal has no bearing on recent long-term deals because Trouba isn't going to be a Jet long term.

Trouba's first game back plays 23:14 ..

1) How the heck does he hit the ground running after his hold out?

2) He is already playing for his next contract.

ice-time is up to the coach, not the player

it was a game that went to OT. Good players force the coaches to play them more. Pretty sure that the plan wasn't to play Trouba more than he could handle.

Myers played 10 minutes, so there were obviously some extraneous circumstances, but don't let that get in the way of a good narrative.

Don't do it, ricardodw.

Buff had more, Enstrom almost as much. What's the deal with Postma and Chiarot? Are they that bad? 9 & 10 minutes.
