Not sure what was worse??

1) Brian Elliott looking lost

2) suspect refereeing

3) Oilers handjob fest

They took a gimme, bobbled it and then kicked it. Some obvious tweaks should be made for Friday when they can pay this one back.

I think you can afford to have 1 or 2 of them, but not 3.

Hoping we see one, if not both, Kulak and Kevin next game.
Against McDavid and the Oilers would you not think Gulutzan would clue into that? Spectacularly bad night for the new coach.

Tkachuk is soon going to have a target on his back. He didn't do a lot with the puck but I'm betting he wasn't invisible to the opponents. He plays pretty dirty.

Which isn't a negative necessarily of course.

Positives:
- Troy Brouwer
- Alex Chiasson
- Michael Frolik
- Matt Stajan
- Brodie was OK I guess
- Gaudreau, maybe?
- Special Teams

Negatives (bold especially so):
- Nick Grossmann
- Brian Elliott
- Dennis Wideman
- Sam Bennett
- Sean Monahan
- Glen Gulutzan's coaching style
- Officiating
- Dougie Hamilton
- Mark Giordano

More or Less Invisible
- Kris Versteeg
- Lance Bouma
- Matthew Tkachuk
Disagree - I liked what I saw from Versteeg, Tkachuk, Bennett. Gulutzan's PK has been encouraging, but the D pairings have been depressing. Gaudreau wasn't that impressive, he was normal Johnny, but had some disappointing give-aways that seemed to influence the momentum. Brouwer, in my mind, was slightly disappointing, aside from his break-away goal... More-or-less invisible, specifically in the first half of the game.

That game was hard to watch for a lot of reasons.

Elliott was horrendous. Absolutely horrendous. I'm not worried going forward but incredibly disappointed right now.

So many of our best players were bad to awful. Tough to think of a Flame that played well. Backlund, Frolik, Engelland. Thought Tkachuk played well for an 18 year old rookie.

The rest? Hang your heads.
Add Chiasson & Stajan to the played well list for tonight.

I'll try and focus on the positives.

Players I liked out there

-Versteeg
-Frolik
-Brouwer

Special teams looked good imo. Lots of chances on the PP, and the two shorty's of course.
Beat them on Faceoffs
41 Shots on goal.

I'm going to let tonight go, I did see things that the team can build off. Such a great start to the 2nd period totally ruined by the phantom penalty shot. I'll chalk the rest of the questionable reffing up to just the normal standard that we should all be used too. But the penalty shot sequence? Unbelievable, and completely changed the game.

Gaudreau looked like a player that missed training camp

But for the love of ####ing God, fix those D pairings

Both would be a nice change. They are much more mobile than Grossman, Engelland and Wideman, but it will probably just be one of them. They will likely keep Engelland in as Lucic deterrent.

Elliott was hiller'esque.

Tkatchuk shouldn't be in the nhl yet, let alone the 2nd line.
Elliott looked like Hiller if he was playing without a blocker.

I only caught the 3rd, but everything just looked, out of order. So many pissed plays that could have ended in good chances.

The top two forwards both basically missing training camp doesn't help.

Well, those D-pairings might have made sense in theory, but boy did they not make sense in practice. Grossman is perfect - the guy you want to be sitting rather than a rookie. That's about it. I guess he did some things that were ok, but the first 2 goals were from a direct turnover by him.

Elliott seemed like Hiller out there tonight. I will chalk it up to first game nerves.

The entire team seemed disjointed.

I do like the PK a lot more - so much more pressure. I do like how they are putting more pressure on the puck carriers on zone entries, but then they just seemed lost at times too.

From top to bottom, this team didn't seem right. Lots of kinks to iron out by the looks of it. Better be worked out soon - every game counts so much.

Bad Johnny is still better than most of our forwards usually.

Agreed he needs to be miles better though

You should add Ferland to the list. What's he doing just skating around touching nobody. Freddie Hamilton can do that.
He was actually at fault for the first 2 goals. Horrible pass up the middle for the 1st. Jumps up in the play and instead of putting it on net, attempts to feed it under a sliding defender which leads to a 2 on 1 going the other way for the 2nd.

I can see the theory behind Gulutzan's D-pairings, and it makes me really nervous that he's the kind of coach that thought it would work.

We have 3 great D-men on this team. Pairing each of them with a plug does not spread the greatness... it spreads the suck. Suck is dominant gene.
