The guy is 30 years old but we're not talking about a sprained ankle we're talking about the thing that keeps his head safely connected to his shoulders.
But I really understand the pressure these guys are under to maximize their earning potential during their careers.
So yeah, I'm really happy to hear this news. The guy still gets paid and hes not risking very, very serious injury that will have consequences for the rest of his life.

Plus the neck serves as a channel for the entire nervous system. Not only can neck injuries result in chronic pain that lasts a lifetime, it can also mess with almost all other parts of the body

If people have a history of being reasonable, rational posters, they get the benefit of the doubt.
If people have a history of starting fights, being unreasonable/insulting/antagonizing, they don't get the benefit of the doubt, and people are more sensitive to comments that could elicit negative reactions.
I don't believe I've ever replied to any of your comments, but I've read many of them. I think you fall into the latter category. Victim complexes, my-way-or-the-highway, indignant, hostile... those kinds of traits don't result in people being afforded courtesies such as benefit of the doubt.

And he seems to be a one-issue poster. I don't read his posts as a result unless necessary to follow a line of conversation that is otherwise interesting.

Let's see: Locke posted he was happy FOR Ladi. This way he can't make a decision to try and keep playing, gets to enjoy his family and health, and be rich. Locke expounded on all these points and was clear it was a celebration of Smid's ability to have a full, mostly pain free life.
You posted "Yes!!!" and that's it. A celebratory exclamation that, on it's surface, looks like joy at Ladi's expense. And that's being charitable. What I read it as, is Excellent, more money for my Hero. Which is even more deplorable. And of course I assumed that of you, seeing as the ONLY subject you have commented on is Johnny Hockey. In multiple threads, always Johnny, and how we undervalue him. So yeah I thought the worst of your post. As anyone would.
Get lost Kid, I ain't buying anymore. My daughter brings me the Thin Mints now.

Yeah dude, at some point you've gotta make a commitment to be a better poster. Saying things like you did in this thread... I believe Boomer would tell you to "clean it up". Any potential flaw or fault that Gaudreau has can't possibly be true according to you, it seems. He's older than his comparables? Who cares, he's the greatest, how dare you for suggesting otherwise?
Just... tone it down, man. Take in some fresh air. I dunno.

I took this as a reaction to the cap situation based on the fact that Smid is forced onto LTIR.
In that way it's like yelling "Yes!" when you find out your grandma died because she left you a fat inheritance. Yeah... I get you're not actually cheering for the death of your grandma, but there's a time and a place man.
Edit: More on topic, I know Smid is married, but does anyone know where his wife is from? I feel like I've heard somewhere that she's an Alberta local? If so, I would imagine he might be more interested in sticking around North America rather than heading home to scout/coach in Europe somewhere.

Tough Decision Forces Smid To Sidelines

"At this point it would be too big of a risk, I feel like, to try to play through my neck issues. I think the year will help me. Hopefully my neck will settle down a little more.
"I'm only 30 years old, so I would like to be out there helping the team, but it is what it is. You have only one health. It's not like I'm retiring. But for this year, I'm going to have to sit out.
"It's obviously hard, but it's not a decision we made overnight. We talked the whole summer. It wasn't just my decision. It was doctors. I heard so many different opinions. We made the decision together."

Yup.
Will drop this research from last year, here. Incompetence is too light a term, the Oilers doctors and executive at the time played Russiian roulette with this guys career and quality of life. Years later the long term effects are starting to be realized.

I guess everyone knew this was coming. Really liked the physical presence he brought to the team - we miss that on defense especially.
Here's hoping he pulls a Gary Roberts!

We should get a draft pick back as compensation. Maybe something punitive like their 2015 First Rounder.

Yeah.
It's sad to hear that his health issues could force him out of the game – but I'm glad that he's not trying to force himself to play while injured. And I'm glad he's getting paid for the remainder of his contract, because the guy is a warrior and it's no fault of his that he can't play. And yes, I'm glad that the LTIR exemption will come into effect so the Flames can afford to sign another defenceman.
Still, I hope he can make a full recovery. It's at least conceivable that a year off will allow him to heal to the point where he can play again without risking re-injury. Maybe he should be talking to Gary Roberts, who missed an entire season with a neck injury but then went on to play portions of 12 more seasons. If there is a way to repair his neck safely, Roberts can probably help him track it down.

Yes indeed. I have noticed and it is appreciated. Maybe still not the one to be preaching to others about being better posters.

|
You're bang on. It's more complicated in how it impacts the how much cap space is left later in the year, if the cap hit were removed his ~19k per day salary would compound to be potentially used later in the season. Instead the Flames can exceed the cap by up to that much per day and it does not compound.
For example if the flames do not use any LTIR relief they will be able to add another player with a $3.5 million AAV, but if the cap hit was outright removed and they did not spend that space they could acquire a player with $3.5 million remaining (essentially a $10 million player).
On the surface it seems like a very small difference but in reality it can actually make a significant difference
