Good point. I'm betting Montreal doesn't want anything to do with him.
So that's 2 organizations that handed Roy the keys to the city and he in turn sorta takes a dump on them and ruins the relationship. I wonder how long it will take for him to get around to the other 28 (29) franchises. More likely he'll never get the chance. He'll probably get another chance somewhere, but if it goes the same as it did in Colorado, that'll probably be it for his NHL career.
Pretty big dick move to do it while Sakic was on vacation.

As others have already said, he was a great goalie but an emotional wreck as a person. Not surprised he is pulling this stunt at all. This just seems like a repeat of his spaz out and resulting trade when he was left in net during a blowout in MTL. Main difference being there is likely no soft landing for him elsewhere. I would be surprised if there is a clamoring market out there eagerly waiting for coach Roy.
I guess its too much to expect a little humility from this guy.

I'm not defending Roy the person, but I can respect the fact that he saw things differently than the rest of ownership/management and decided to bow out. From my understanding, that's why Brent Sutter never renewed with us, no? He had a different vision regarding the team's future.
Bizarre timing to it all either way, but I have more respect for someone who is honest about their position as opposed to someone who's quiet about it and never really jumps into the new direction of the team with both feet.

I can respect that too, but as per usual with Pat Roy is the way he carries about his business, no class.

Seeing as Roy is apparently getting paid for the final year of his contract, I would suggest you're right.

They say goalies are crazy...
I wonder if Hartley will be a serious consideration for the Avs. Sakic played for him, won a cup with him, and it seems they had mutual respect - but Roy was known for being one of those 'hard coaches', so a 'player's coach' type would make more sense if the Avs want to make a change. Hartley did have young players playing well under him, so that would definitely be a consideration.
With both Hartley and Roy available, I wonder if it makes Montreal think about dumping Therrien.
Avs should be better now, though from the outside looking in they seem to be dysfunctional. Maybe too dysfunctional for a coach to turn around this season quickly enough.

Brent never renewed with the Flames because the Flames never gave him a contract offer to renew.

Those two cities are nothing alike!
I remember reading about how Landeskog and Duchene didn't get along with Roy. Maybe the Avs' reluctance to part with either or both of them spurred this on.

I think it was a take off on Colborne saying Denver was like Calgary only better.

Not much to respect really as he should have quit last month. Also the optics of quitting because you aren't getting your way doesn't exactly exude high character. The NHL is filled with really good guys but Roy isn't one of them as he's always been an egotistical jerk.
At the end of the day though he's probably doing the organization a favour as unless they completely botch this hire the next guy should be an immediate upgrade.

Sakic is my all-time favourite player, and this is perhaps unrelated to Roy leaving in particular but overall, I just feel like this is a messed up organization. Makes me wonder is Sakic is the right GM for this team, just seems like overall they need to be better managed and better coached as well.
Despite the western conference rivalry, Avs are a team I personally would love to see improve, succeed, and get back in the playoffs.

You guys are making way too big if a deal out of this. He won multiple cups and is free to do as he pleases, I really doubt he cares whether he gets an NHL job if that's what he did. He marches to his own drum, good on him. It's just a job people are allowed to quit.

Making too big of a deal of a head coach that quit on an NHL franchise a month before training camp? You make it sound like NHL coaches do this all the time. It happens but not very often that professional sports head coaches quit on their teams and the timing in this instance is poor so I think it's pretty big league news. I'm sure he doesn't give two craps what you or I think of him but that doesn't change the fact that he's an egotistical jerk that lost a power struggle and is taking his ball and going home with his tail between his legs.
