Ortio doesn't get claimed and sent down. flames limp through the rest of the season with the less than dynamic duo (Hiller and Ramo) Neither gets signed in the off-season and Flames sign a high end free agent goalie and a competent back-up. This is my best case scenario.

I think he will clear. Treliving probably already shopped him around and if there was an inkling of interest, he probably would have traded him for at least futures if he thought there was a chance that he would get picked up.

Why did Ramo get such a long leash when he was just as bad (if not worse)? Why is Hiller being handed the NHL job, when he was just as bad? Neither of those guys will be back next year (I hope), why not give the 24 year old pending RFA some chances instead?
|
Because he wasn't. He had an eight game stretch in November with a 2.24 GAA and .921 save percentage.
And that is why Ortio got stuck - Hartley went with the goalie who was getting it done.

So we're going with the 2 UFAs over the young draftee with potential that they've been developing for years? Wow I have to say I'm surprised. They must really not like him.
Treliving's handling of this goalie situation was his first and only real mistake so far IMO. And it has the potential to be a long term mistake, hopefully he doesn't get claimed!

I hope Ortio clears, but I don't blame him if he's hoping to get claimed.

Of course he's hoping he gets claimed. NHL Salary > AHL Salary

To be fair, he's already making that sitting on the bench.
NHL salary with playing time > NHL salary with no playing time.

Yeah... ummm but he won't be if he doesn't get claimed, he'll get assigned to the AHL...which is what we're talking about.
La duh.

Nope. Ramo was playing like garbage and Hartley decided to run with him anyways instead of switching the goalies every game. It wasn't until a few games after Hartley made that decision that Ramo started playing decent.

No chance Winnipeg claims him with Helleybuck in the wings.
Only team that has me slightly concerned is Florida if Montoya is out for a while.

I wonder who they free agent goalies are this year, and I wonder if the Flames have the cap space to sign someone.

Doesn't matter though. Is there a better opportunity for a third goalie than when the first two are playing like hot garbage?

So are we signing Cam Ward, James Reimer or both? Because that's the cream of this crop.

Actually Ortio is on a 1 way deal this year. Officially his salary is the same in the NHL or the AHL.
Technically it is higher in the AHL because he doesn't have to pay escrow to the NHL while he is in the AHL.

Pretty sure Ortio is on a one way deal this year. I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure he would make his NHL salary whether he plays in Calgary or Stockton.

A friend of mine offered a good point. He thinks Dallas might be the best bet. In all situations though, Ortio will probably be going back on waivers when the other guy returns. In that case Calgary gets first dibs and can put him in the minors without having to clear waivers.

Ah, I knew he signed a new deal last year, didn't know it shifted to one-way for this season.
Cha-ching mister Ortio.

Exactly. The opportunity was there for a Hammond type of situation where an AHL goaltender takes the ball and runs with it in turn setting himself up for a contract. Ortio didn't have it in him. It doesn't mean NHL isn't in the cards for him but it's not right now as he's still has work to do in the AHL.

Oh I agree. Just stings to see the young one get very little time to work out of it versus the to UFAs who have no future in this organization get more leash. They are all pretty bad this season, would have liked to see the one with actual potential get a little more slack is all.
