Hypothetically, this could make sense. A solid young NHL D, and a strong prospect (if Ritchie in fact is).
It wouldn't matter that's it's the Ducks - it's only for balance of season.

Agreed.
I do agree that the Ducks make a lot of sense though. As soon as I heard the asking price I started thinking about deadline destinations.

I know how awesome he is. Fact remains though, it's not wise to be carrying a 39 year old at 9M cap-hit.
|
There is no way he ends up with a $9million cap hit. It's a bargaining position, people. He'll sign for less than that, but to make sure Gio gets good value in the negotiations his agent is going in way over the top.
Treliving gets him signed for a $7m AAV. My crystal ball says so.

Trading Gio seems so hard to stomach because of his unquestioned leadership and how he has led the culture change within the team. Team can't afford to lose that.
But trading a 30 something star defenceman for an elite prospect or two makes sense given the young age of the rest of the teams nucleus.
I have no doubt he stays but fun to think of the possibilities.

How about a deal sorrounding Karl Alzner and Mark Giordano?
Karl Alzner + Marcus Johansson + 2016 1st (If Giordano signs an extension) for Mark Giordano + Mason Raymond
Gaudreau-Monahan-Frolik
Johansson-Bennett-Hudler
Brodie-Hamilton
Alzner-Wideman
Russell-Prospect/Engelland

Gio to TOR for JVR in a package built around those two. IF Gio were to be traded I think it would be more for established NHL roster talent than anything else.
Losing the leadership is too much right now for the Flames though.

I have faith in Treliving that if the right deal is to be made with Gio that it will be made and if it isn't that he will find us a solid return for him. I love having Gio on the team but I also get excited thinking about the possible return we could land for him as well. Maybe that's just because trades are exciting or maybe because long term it might be the better path. Tough to say.

I don't see how you can say that when the Flames battled and made it into the playoffs without him and even won a round. I think he's an amazing leader but at the same time I don't think the team lives or dies with or without him.

If we have to trade Gio I would target a youth package myself. Definitely do not trade a #1D for a winger that would be the worst move to make u less the winger was a stud under the age of 22 which JVR is not.
Also I do not see Gio waiving to another rebuilding situation even if Toronto is his home town.
I think the Ducks are a great fit as they need to go all in right now and have the assets to get it done. Ritchie, Theodore, 1st

If our team want's more size and forward depth and more depth on the backend then that trade definitely addresses those areas. Plus a 1st. Actually not a bad deal. Kind of hinges on Ritchie panning out but value wise seems pretty fair.

7-11 month countdown to trade Gio. Just hope he can stay injure-free to get a big return on or before trading deadline if he and his agent still asks for the ridiculous terms for his new contract. If Gio stays injure-free the whole season and the Flames make the playoffs, the situation becomes pretty interesting for both sides. TBH, I think 5 years $6mil AAV (anything under 6.5 AAV) is very fair value for Gio and he'll be the highest paid Flames for the next 5 years unless the next superstar free agent is signed before then.

Diminish. His contract would become harder to move, we'd have to retain salary to move him, it would honestly be somewhat like the situation the TML find themselves in with Phaneuf. They wanted to trade him at the deadline, Friedman has said that Phaneuf really wanted a trade as well. But they couldn't get anyting done. The only teams rumored to be interested, Detroit and Dallas, have gone with other players for less money and term.
Peak value would be 2 years left on a contract. Long enough to get a good contribution from the guy in his prime, and ends before he starts slowing down. You can re-evaluate where he is and how he's holding up.

I'm pretty sure 99% of posters here would be elated at 5 years 6 million but I don't think there is a chance in hell that is happening. I'm thinking realistically it's more like 7-7.5 on a 5-7 year deal which probably is fair but do you really want to commit to that?

But the Ducks have a small window with the salary they have tied up in their top forwards, and while their D is good they are all young. An established top d-man could be just what they need to get over the hump.
Wonder if they would part with one of their young D + Ritchie...

Young D as in? Fowler? Lindholm? Vatanen? I can't see them entertaining that, nevermind including Ritchie.

On ice I have zero debate with that. It's the off ice efforts we don't see that Burke, Treliving and pretty much anyone else in the organization keep raving about that make me think a Gio trade would be catastrophic right now. Perhaps at the deadline if they don't reach and extension before then because economics factor in at that point.

Nevermind adding Ritchie? To me Lindholm would be the only u touchable on that list. I could see the Ducks moving one of the other guys and Ritchie. Theodore is a D prospect not on their roster they could move in a trade which I have mentioned before.
I am looking forward to the contract being signed as I think the reality is Gio is going no where

As great as Gio is, I can't see them trading any of Vatanen/Fowler/Lindholm for a 32 year old defenseman. When's the last time you seen a star player return a young stud player like Anaheim's Dmen? It rarely happens, if Gio were to be dealt it'd most likely be futures.
Forgot about Theodore, a deal around him and picks and a lesser roster player would make sense.

No one but you suggested their top 3 NHL d-men. They actually have a wealth of young talent on the blue-line in their system.

You, in fact did. Outside of Theodore they don't have anyone noteworthy so clearly you were talking about their youngsters already on the team.

Go into their prospect system listings and look at the number of young D they have.
Nowhere did I say their top 3 NHL d-man. You made that leap, not me. And if I wasn't clear in the initial post, I just said it above, and again now. Hope that clears up any confusion for you.
