I don't think I said I hated him, but I sure posted about it negatively. It was because they showed him every frikkin' time.
On the main question, there were different reasons for non-Canadian wins over time. In the 90s, no cap and the low Canadian dollar made several Canadian teams, including the Flames, uncompetitive as far as the ability to sign good players or hold on to those they drafted. Calgary had to let Newy, MacInnis and Fleury go, while they were either still prime or at least still great.
As was mentioned, Calgary should have won it in '04, and the Oilers could have in the next season.
They should have showed him when we scored too, but of course they didn't.
I stand by my hatred of the old man doing the double guns at the camera after every Ducks goal.
To be fair I also dislike a few Flames fans that always get shown after our goals. Especially the bigger guy on the glass that seems to be a Preds fan first. And the mustached trucker hat guy because he always acts so smug.

I actively make a point to cheer against the other Canadian teams.
1.) I want Calgary to be the team to bring the cup back to Canada
2.) I want the game to grow in the states. I could pretend it's cause I want more talent but it's actually cause I want more fellow fans! The bigger of a deal the NHL becomes the more meaningful it is when we do well. I'm just weird like that. That's why I can't get excited for the CFL. Tough to care when you're the only place that does.

I might be able to cheer for other Canadian teams if their fans were respectable human beings. But as it stands right now, it's Calgary Flames for me or any American team.
From 1942 to 1993, the Stanley Cup was won by a Canadian team 36 out of 52 times (69.2%). At no time during that stretch were more than one third of the teams in the NHL based in Canada.
Since the NHL took over the Stanley Cup in 1927, the Cup has been awarded 87 times, and it has gone to a Canadian team 41 of those times. Even after 22 years without a Cup, Canadian teams have still won more than would be expected by straight percentages.
Between 1982 and 1990, there was a Western Canadian team in the Finals every year. Between 1981 and 1994, there was at least one Canadian team among the final four playoff teams every year.
If anything, the last two decades have just been the inevitable correction for the previous dominant years.
Really, though, there's no single reason. Each team has its own reasons for not winning the Cup. Even for each team, the reasons change over time. Singling out the Canadian teams is really just arbitrary.
You could just as easily ask why no Pacific Time Zone team won the Cup until 2007, but have won it three times since. Or, why Dallas in 1999 was the only Central Time Zone team to win the Cup between Chicago's wins in 1961 and 2010. There wasn't even a Mountain Time Zone team in the NHL until 1976, yet between 1984 and 2001, the Cup was won by a Mountain team 8 times.

It's not the Olympics. ONE citys team doesn't carry the weight of a whole nation. Thats the same #### the Raptors and Blue Jays say. In fact in one of the most recent Raptors commercials the say Canada's team and "35 million strong" I'm one of those 35 million strong and hate both sports.
So being a Flames fan you would actually hope the Edm or Van would win if the flames got knocked out. And they didn't?
If Edmonton or Vancouver were playing and American team in the Stanley Cup, I would cheer for Edmonton or Vancouver by virtue of their being a Canadian team. It's not nor does it have to be the Olympics for me to cheer a Canadian vs. an American team (Unless a buddy was playing for the Yanks) - I am capable of suspending rivalry hatred.
I don't pay much attention to baseball and basketball (zzzzzz) but in the unlikely event I was watching the BJ's play Oakland, I'd probably cheer for the BJ's (even tho' the Athletics have cool uniforms).
If Edmonton or Vancouver were playing and American team in the Stanley Cup, I would cheer for Edmonton or Vancouver by virtue of their being a Canadian team. It's not nor does it have to be the Olympics for me to cheer a Canadian vs. an American team (Unless a buddy was playing for the Yanks) - I am capable of suspending rivalry hatred.

The next time Canada competes for the Stanley Cup will be the first time. It is not an international tournament, it is a club tournament. Not a single one of these teams does now, or ever has, represented the country.

That said, I don't agree with the suggestion that to be a "hardcore Flames fan", one must cheer against the other Canadian teams. I would always cheer against the Oilers and Canucks because I hate them and their fans suck, but if it came up as someone like Montreal vs. Pittsburgh, I'd probably cheer Montreal since I dislike them less.
As much as I enjoy semantics and non sequitur, I would think it was intuitively obvious what I meant.

They are our biggest rivals, why would you ever cheer for them against some random team like St Louis or Florida?
