Byron has not been good lately.

But I guess you're an expert.

Starting to see the turnovers turn into goals against.

All in all it wasn't a bad game. Great third period, good first period, decent puck possession. The second period saw both chasing and lack of 'moving the feet' which led to basically zero attack for 20 solid minutes.

Coming up fast on the whipping boy list has to be Derek Engelland. Took a bad penalty in the third, was on the ice for a goal against, and only saw 9:30 of ice time. It seems like Hartley is using him as infrequently as possible to let the top 4 catch their breath, but obviously there is little trust in him by the coach. Smid with 10:14 and an unsuccessful turn at the PK is also worrisome.

^As neither Smid nor Engelland can be considered part of the future plans of the organization, I think it's time we start trying to plug those holes with different pieces.

Gaudreau and Hudler had a negative effect on the team tonight. When they are flashy but don't score we wind up giving up some high quality scoring chances the other way. That's the risk/reward of the style they played tonight. Wasn't rewarded though. Had one of them scored on that opening goal before it went back the other way, the whole game would have been different.

I thought the effort was there, Jooris is playing his guts out, and Granlund is giving it everything, but you can see they are still just a little bit green at the NHL level in terms of having the outcome they want every shift.

Still thought it was a pretty gutsy effort.

Also, Phaneuf is a phallus.

I think if we want to make the play offs, we need to upgrade our 3rd defensive pairing. Engelland is just awful, Smid has too many brain farts and Diaz...well, he is lucky to be a 7th defenseman on this team, because he wouldn't be that high with anyone else. Its getting to the stage now where those 3 are costing us a bad goal a night. Call Wotherspoon up already, he can't be as bad as these 3.

Oh and I'm sorry, but pulling Hiller with 15-20 seconds left at 3-1 down? Stupid. Losing 3-1 looks respectable, losing 4-1 looks like we got blown out. What I will give credit to the Leafs for was shutting down our defense and their attempts to create offence. Wideman, Russell and Gio had real trouble getting lanes to shoot the puck all game.

Just feel really sick. There was a good push from everyone tonight, but at the same time something just felt off about us. Too many passes didn't connect, too many moves broke down. After a decent first period, it took us 30 minutes to get ourselves properly set and going again. I hope Raymond gets up to speed in quick time, he was so rusty tonight and it really dragged his line mates down.

Was it me or did Hartley jiggle the lines up in the 3rd period? Can't work out if that actually did anything for us or not? Really disappointed with that. Pleased with the work ethic, but I just have this bitter taste in my mouth. Probably because we've lost to the Leafs.

We have to come out flying against buffalo. It shouldn't take us to go 2-0 down to score 2 or 3

The effort was decent for the most part. I don't think we can be a playoff with Smid and Engelland. They contribute nothing offensively and their lack of skating ability make them a defensive liability. If we're not going go out and acquire someone better, we may as well call up Wotherspoon. He looked NHL ready last year is Addy's #1 defensemen by all accounts.

I wonder if Treliving and Burke can acknowledge their $2,900,000 x3 mistake? We have at least 3 guys on the farm more deserving of that spot.

In a third line position I feel he has been quite good. You can see other players not expecting his style of physical play.

That was still a play that single-handedly ended the game. There was 40 seconds left and he had all the space in the world in the corner. Not the time at all for a desperation pass.

That being said, we simply aren't good enough to no-show the way we did for the first 10 minutes of the second and expect to win. The Flames were fortunate to even be in a position to tie it in the final minutes. Too many mistakes, again.

Byron was what he's been all season long: a hard-nosed, tenacious, 3rd/4th line player that plays way above his size and expectations.

Unfortunately, one bad play that sealed the win for the opposition will be the only thing that sticks in some people's minds. Using his stats over the last 8-10 games really means nothing, as that trend has been there throughout the season.

He hasn't been bad, he hasn't been "not good", he's been Paul Byron...a player better than expected and filling a solid role on the team.

So, why is a 3rd line player out with 40 seconds to go, down by 1?

Edit: and I agree with Yamer. He just had no place on the ice in that position IMO.

We had 33 shots on net and only scored 1. It's not Byron's fault we lost the game ffs let's get off the guys back. He made a mistake everyone does

No you weren't. You've been beating the drum of "veterans coming back from injury are going to ruin chemistry" and then you post that "fact" to remind everyone what you were talking about. Don't be obtuse. It's boring.

There is no way Stajan had any negative impact on either game. In fact, he's been one of our stronger and more energetic players since he came back. For once the 4th line isn't getting hemmed in our zone and is actually creating some offense, but yup, Matt freaking Stajan is the problem for a couple of losses where we ran into hot goaltending.

Sometimes…this board just…argh….

I don't see anyone blaming the loss on Byron.

I never said it was Byron's fault. He just hasn't been as good (over the past 8-10 games) as he was earlier this year.
